Happy belated birthday to the Gameboy!

by Daniel VuckovicApril 22, 2009

20 years ago (yesterday) Nintendo unleashed upon the world the Game Boy.

Believe it or, the Game Boy is 20 years old. First released in 1989 (1990 in Australia), the console invented the portable gaming market and despite many a competitor, remained basically the dominating force in handheld game for two decades- only to be let go by Nintendo themselves. Designed by Gunpei Yokoi and Nintendos R&D1 team, the Game Boy the unit, despite being as big as it was and having a puke green screen will be remembered for a long time.

The hardware ended sellin gover 118.69 million units which included the upgraded Game Boy Pockets and Game Boy Color. It wasn’t all rosy for the Game Boy, with the console sales stagnating, the Pokémon franchise ended up bringing it back to life. So with 20 years of memories, and the fact that the platform may be older than you are, what are your favourite 20 Gameboy and Gameboy Color games?

Tell us in the forums and we’ll be doing a feature of our favourites soon. Now where are my AA Batteries?
