Pokémon X and Y sell over 100,000 copies in Australia in one weekend, fastest selling Nintendo game ever

Nintendo Australia has announced that Pokémon X and Pokémon Y sold over 100,000 in it’s first weekend on sale. For Australia that’s a pretty good amount of games sold.
It’s so big that Pokémon X and Y has broken the record for the most amount of games Nintendo has sold in the fastest time. The previous record holder was 80,000 copies of Pokémon Black and Pokémon White – but that was over the first week.
Pokémon X and Y sold more than this on the first day alone. Considering the small user base of the Nintendo 3DS compared to the Nintendo DS when Black and White were released, that’s impressive.
Since launch the game has been consistently sold out, that soon should change that as Nintendo Australia will be receiving more stock to fill those shelves. Have you had issues finding a copy of Pokémon X or Pokémon Y?
So that’s why both have been out of stock for over a month…
stocks were all sold out at EB games and JB HiFi in Wellington, the two big game shops in Wellington NZ on Pokémon weekend, my nephew a friend of mine hung out for the day outside JB’s and a good number of Poké trainers came out of the woodwork and joined us, it was terrific, most were huge fans. Few intoductions were required.
Man, that’s so great. If only other 3DS games could attract such fanfare. I even managed to convince a few people to buy a 3DS for this game.
On launch day, I was working and I couldn’t get to Big W until 7.30pm (and they were sold out), so I rushed to my nearest Kmart which was just 10 minutes from closing and they had both games tucked away in their storeroom (they obviously didn’t have it on their shelves). I even had my Big W catalogue in hand so I could get Kmart to price match Big W (W had it for $44), but to my surprise, Kmart was selling it for only $45 so I didn’t bother asking them to match.
The game could use some polish, but I’m confident that Game Freak will have the creases ironed out by the time the next Pokémon game is released.
got mine on launch day at about 9am. when i got to my EB store they said they only had a few copies left. apparently they stopped price matching after midday because they expected BigW to be sold out by then :/
Had Nintendo released more copies, it could’ve done even better.
Pokemon X and Y sold around 5 million copies in it’s first two days and was then sold out everywhere so it couldn’t sell any more units.
Then there’s GTA, which iirc sold around 17 million in the same time.
I know that GTA was multi console and far more owned consoles so there are more potential customers, however, I do wish Nintendo had prepared more copies of the game to sell rather than have people wait an extra month.
Nintendo have been making poor decisions all year so it doesn’t surprise me.
It just seems slack and silly in my opinion, but I guess they had their reasons, maybe.
It’s not the worst thing in the world to be unable to supply everyone. It just means the game exceeded expectations worldwide, and considering the 3DS hasn’t yet gotten close to the sales insanity that the DS was, I think that might explain why they were conservative.
Well deserved IMO, it’s my favourite game of the year. I did remember asking the lady at EB Games on launch day when I picked up my copy if they had many copies left, and she told me they would sell out by the end of the day.
