Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire biggest Nintendo, Pokémon launches in Australia ever

Never doubt the power of Pokemon! Nintendo Australia has just announced that Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire is now the biggest launch for a Nintendo game ever in Australia and at the same time the biggest for a Pokémon game in Australia.

In its first week on sale Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire sold over 120,000 copies locally, the biggest launch of a Nintendo game here in Australia, ever. It eclipses that of the 100,000 copies that Pokemon X and Y sold just last year in its first week. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire therefore shatters both records!

If you want to go even further back to see how much Pokemon continues to grow, in the same week that Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire launched Pokemon X and Pokémon Y  went and surpassed Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl to become the biggest selling Pokémon titles ever in Australia with 330,000 sales.

“We’re thrilled to see players in Australia and New Zealand embracing the latest Pokémon titles on Nintendo 3DS” said Darryl Mohr, Nintendo Australia’s Director of Sales and Marketing. “Considering the install base of Nintendo DS at the time of Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl, these two new records are a testament to the quality of Pokémon titles available for the Nintendo 3DS family of consoles heading into the holiday season.”

Considering the size of the Nintendo DS install base at the time of release, it’s crazy to see a Nintendo 3DS iteration outsell them with the smaller user base it has.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire now sits at 7.7 million sold worldwide. To put it in perspective how small Australia is we’re .1 of that figure.
