Bill Trinen to compete at EVO 2015 in Super Smash Bros for Wii U

Keen-eyed Nintendo fans noticed a familiar name on the bracket for this year’s Smash Wii U tournament at Evo – Bill Trinen, playing under the tag “Th | trintroll”. Of course, Bill Trinen is a Nintendo Direct superstar who also moonlights as the Senior Product Marketing Manager for Nintendo of America, as well as Shigeru Miyamoto’s translator. But his Twitter handle is trintran – was this an imposter, or the real deal?

Well, on his personal Twitter account this morning, Bill confirmed that he is indeed competing in in the tournament! Bill says he’s a Yoshi and Rosalina main, with a few other characters up his sleeve just in case. He may just be playing himself down to get everyone’s guard down, but from the sounds of it he’s not expecting to get very far in the tournament – he’s guaranteed to get through his first match though, as he’s been given a bye!

This will be Super Smash Bros. for Wii U’s premiere year at Evo, after the runaway success of Super Smash Bros. Melee in previous years showed that Smash fans were just as keen for Evo as anyone else. Both games have huge player counts this year, but Smash Wii U has overtaken Melee with 1926 competitors to 1869. These are the second and third highest playercounts at this year’s Evo, behind Street Fighter IV at 2227 players, and ahead of Mortal Kombat X with 1162 players.

This year’s Evo takes place from July 17th to 19th Vegas time, but local Australian times are hard to gauge until the finalised schedule is released. Best of luck to all competitors, and to Bill – though let’s be honest, he probably can’t do much worse than Reggie!
