Switch eShop gets PayPal support

An easier way to pay, pal.

People have been asking for years and now it’s finally happening — for the first time on a Nintendo product, the Switch’s eShop now offers the ability to purchase games using PayPal.

Launched quietly earlier today, first on the Japanese eShop, the little “PayPal” button began rolling out to eShop listings around the world. So far, Japan, North America, Europe and the UK have received the functionality, but sadly no luck on the Aussie eShop yet.

The process is a bit strange, requiring you to link a PayPal account to your Nintendo Account on a web browser instead of on the Switch, but it’s better than no PayPal at all. Sadly, this doesn’t make it any easier to purchase games from overseas eShops, as the process requires your PayPal account to match the eShop region, as well as any cards attached to it. And since PayPal accounts require a phone number from the region they’re created for, it’s not exactly a walk in the park to get things up and running, and you’re probably just better off buying eShop cards through somewhere like PlayAsia.

We’ll update this article if anything changes, and keep our fingers crossed that Australia gets some PayPal love soon.
