Nintendo has officially announced New Super Mario Bros. U for the Wii U at their 2012 E3 press conference. Surprisingly it turned out to be one of the high points of the show as well.

If you’ve experienced the previous NSMB titles on the Wii or DS, then you should know exactly what to expect from this new entry in the series, designed ground-up for the Wii U and its GamePad controller.

The title plays like its predecessors, but includes unique gameplay involving the Wii U GamePad.

The player in control of the Wii U GamePad will be able to jump in on action at any time and provide the other players in the game with extra assistance. This GamePad support is being referred to as ‘Boost Mode’ and will also enable interaction and manipulation of enemies, and attempts at cooperative speed runs to become a reality.

Those in control of the Wii U GamePad will also be able to switch screens whenever they like, as previously shown in the Wii U launch trailer.

Lastly, with the assistance of the Nintendo Network and MiiUniverse, NSMB. U players will be able to read other players comments and accomplishments, and also leave their own feedback for others to read.

I’ve been writing about video games since 2006 and playing them since I was a kid. I started out with a copy of Mario & Yoshi on the Game Boy and before I knew it was in debt to Tom Nook. These days I spend much of my time trawling the eShop for the latest downloadable hit.
