Winners of the Vooks Video Game Awards 2006 Announced

by Team VooksJanuary 23, 2007

Last week we asked for our readers to choose from a series of categories, what they thought was the cream of the crop, inside and outside the world of Nintendo. Well the results are in and the winners have been chosen.

Weve put the together the article tonight and you can read the list inside, but once youve read it through discuss it in the forums if you agree with it or even if you dont.

Tomorrow well look at the future of 2007, its a new year so whats on the way?

Worst Game of the Year

1. Pokemon Trozei: 17 points

2. Pokemon Ranger: 16 points
3. Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon: 13 points

It seems Aussies are sick of Pokemon spin offs. Sure the games still sold but these games are obviously just feeding our Pre Diamond and Pearl Pokemon craving and now the fad is wearing off, we can only take so many spin offs before we are sick of it. The fact that the bottom three games are from the Pokemon franchise reinforces this. Diamond and Pearl as soon as possible we cant take another spin-off.

Best Graphics

1. The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess: 62 Points

2. Metroid Prime Hunters: 22 points
3. Red Steel: 15 Points

Sure the Wii isnt a graphical powerhouse to the same degree of its rival consoles, but even on the GameCube hardware, the developers at Nintendo were able to pull out the level of graphics displayed in Twilight Princess. While some of the graphics may be a bit off every now and then, the brilliant art style and presentation outweigh what little problems the game has. Metroid Prime Hunters pushed the Nintendo DS to the max and the frame rate in hectic online battles proves this but the mini Metroid Prime comes second overall. Red Steel is a graphical hit and miss but fortunately the game hits a more then enough to make up for the misses. Red Steel shows the potential of the Wii and we cant wait to see how they improve Red Steel 2.

Surprise of the Year

1. Revolution becomes Wii: 33 points

2. Aus Gets Wii a Month after US: 14 points
3. Aus Gets DS Lite Before the US: 10 points

If someone had said this time last year that the Revolution was going to be called the Wii, Im sure they would have been laughed off the internet. It sure did come as a shock to everyone when Nintendo named the console, but hey, it just proved you never know what to expect from Nintendo.

In another unexpected move we got the DS Lite down here before the US or the UK. In a country where we are used to waiting the longest, it was nice to get something before the US for a change. As for the Wii, while we didnt get it first, we didnt have to wait as long as we have in the past, hell, a month after it came out in the US sounds like a great deal if you ask me.

Best Non Nintendo GOTY

1. Gears of War(360): 17 points

2. Kingdom Hearts 2(ps2): 13 points
3. We <3 Katamari(ps2): 9 points Even though it released later in the year, the impact that Gears of War has made on gaming in its short time is phenomenal. Kingdom Hearts II with the loyal Square and Disney fanbase proved popular and our first taste of Katarmari also made its impact.

Best Moment of the Year

1. Getting a Wii: 24 points

2. Revolution becoming the Wii and getting used to the name: 16 points
3. Playing The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess for the first time: 10 points

It took god knows how long, but it came and when it did everyone rejoiced! There was dancing in the street and a more then a few relieved faces at Nintendo. The Wii hit Australia and the World hard and getting it at home and opening it was the end of one journey for us and the beginning of another. The sheer glee the Wii made us feel as well as Twilight Princess will not be topped for a long time.

Developer of the Year

1. Nintendo: 58 points

2. Square Enix: 25 points
3. Ubisoft: 13 points

2006. Nintendos year. Launch a new console, redesign an older one, release a slew of great games, what more could anyone want from them? The best thing after 2006 is looking forward to 2007. It looks like we could be in for a just as good, if not better year than before. Its a great time to be a Nintendo owner.

Square-Enix has well and truly come back to Nintendo, while they may not have released much in 2006; the amount of games they announced was mind-boggling. 2007 is going to be a big year for them one would think. As for Ubisoft, their support for Wii even matched that of Nintendos at launch and we can only hope things keep up like this for a long time to come.

Best Use of the Wiimote

1. Wii Sports: 64 Points

2. Rayman Raving Rabbids: 30 points
3. The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess: 24 points

When you show the Wii to someone, what is the first game you show them out? Generally, its Wii Sports which was included with every console. Wii Sports is not only a game you can’t not have but one that uses the Wiimote best. Rayman and its crazy rabbids take out spot number two and the sword swinging and arrow shooting of Twilight Princess proves that the Wiimote works with even classic games.

Best Story of the Year

1. The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess: 50 Points

2. Red Steel: 9 points
3. Mario & Luigi Partners in Time: 5 points

We wont give too much away, especially since not everyone has finished the game, but the story and characters in Twilight Princess are the obvious choice for story of the year. Red Steel with its comic book styling and “”unique”” voice acting gets the story across to the player well and Mario and Luigi bring up third spot with a humor filled, top class story.

Best Soundtrack of the Year

1. The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess: 47 points

2. Red Steel: 19 points
3. New Super Mario Brothers: 18 points

Turn on your woofer and the surround sound and the soundtrack of Twilight Princess shines. While some of the game does use midi tracks, this doesnt detract from the overall score throughout the game. Oh and have you been in the Malo Mart? Classic stuff right there. The music in Red Steel also sets a high bar for other Wii games to follow and New Super Mario Bros brings new life to the Mario Brothers with familiar themes but still remaining faithful to classic Super Mario Bros.

Gamecube Game of the Year

1. The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess: 36 points

2. Battalion Wars: 26 points
3. Super Mario Strikers: 13 points

Apart from one or two releases earlier in the year, both of which are featured under this title, the game for the Cube this year was Zelda. While its Wii counterpart arguably beats it out, without the Cube version, Twilight Princess on Wii would not exist. Alas this award won’t be around next year, so not only is TP the best game of 06, but possibly the best GameCube game overall.

Nintendo DS Game of the Year

1. New Super Mario Brothers: 30 points

2. Tetris DS: 14 points
3. Trauma Centre Under the Knife: 10 points

Mario celebrated 20 years down under this year and what a present we got, New Super Mario Bros. This game is one of the best platformers since the original and is totally packed with Mario goodness. Runners up include Tetris DS, another classic from yesteryear given the DS treatment and it just proves how good the concepts are. The third game sneaks in as it was released a mere two days before Christmas and shows the obvious demand for the game that Nintendo and other publishers ignored until recently. Its a crime that its Wii brother does not have a release date yet but of course, we are talking about Trauma Centre: Under the Knife which comes in third.

Wii Game of the Year

1. The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess: 56 points

2. Wii Sports: 36 points
3. Red Steel: 9 points

We learnt at E3 the Wii was going to get Twilight Princess at launch, the first Zelda game to be at Nintendo console launch. The weird experiment of shoehorning the Wiimote controls on basically complete game paid off and it shows, the game is brilliant and is the best game on the Wii and will remain so for most of the year. The Bundled Wii Sports brings up Number two and Red Steel number three. Both great games in their own right but unable to top Zelda.

Vooks Game of the Year

1. The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess: 48 points

2. Wii Sports: 36 points
3. New Super Mario Bros: 11 points

In case you havent been able to tell, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess has won the 2006 Game of the Year award, as voted by you. I dont think many people will argue this fact.

Discuss the awards here!

Thanks to all that voted, look for the GOTY Awards next year too! We’ll have a feature covering 2007 up soon, enough of looking in the past lets look forward.
