It pretty much does nothing.

Get prepared to spend a few minutes updating your Wii U the next time you turn it on, there’s a new firmware out.

Wii U Firmware 3.0.1 has been released today and it offers “further improvements to overall system stability and software compatibility”.

So yeah, nothing much at all. How’s your day?
