Vookcast Episode #91 – VCR Tape #001: Metroid: Other M

The team debuts a new format to discuss one of Nintendo's most divisive games.

by James MitchellFebruary 12, 2014

The team has been busy at work researching and playing one of the most divisive Nintendo games to bring you this episode of the podcast – our long awaited (and possibly overdue) Metroid Other M in-depth critique!

The regular team of James, Steven and Daniel take us through the game from beginning to end – covering the writing of the game itself, including the characterisation of Samus and Adam, as well as the federation. After a short break we return with a discussion of the gameplay and how it impacted (both positively and negatively) the game itself. To finish, we discuss the visual presentation and soundtrack of the game in comparison to previous games like Prime and the original games.

Of course, as we asked the community, we also close with a discussion of all your opinions of the game.

We hope you enjoy this alternate format to the podcast, but those who aren’t fans of Metroid need not to fret – we’ll be back with a brand new episode in a fortnight with the traditional format. This format is new and we’ll be doing them from time to time, though, so make sure to give us feedback in the comments!

This episode was produced by James and features the following music in order of appearance:

The Story So Far (from Metroid: Other M)
by Kuniaki Haishima

Main Sector Theme 2 (from Metroid: Other M)
by Kuniaki Haishima

Pyrosphere Industrial Theme (from Metroid: Other M)
by Kuniaki Haishima

Cryosphere Depths Theme (from Metroid: Other M)
by Kuniaki Haishima

Enjoyed it guys and really like the concept.
Fav part of all podcasts is talking about games, particularly in detail like this. Sometimes I find u discuss games that only one of you have played and you don’t get to the real detail of the game because of other things you want to cover which leaves the conversation lacking, but that certainly isn’t the case here.
Interesting to hear your opinions on the story, position in the franchise, healing etc…… I find it funny as so many games (mario in particular) don’t care about these things and are still really enjoyable experiences. You obviously expect more or care more about this franchise.
Look forward to the next one, much more interesting for me than news, sales figures, direction of company etc. pick a game you like though!!!

I really enjoyed listening to this episode. It’s great that you explored the controversy behind this game, something I was curious about (I haven’t played any of the Metroid games yet).

I hope you do more of these in-depth game episodes in the future. Have you had any suggestions for games to look at?

    Hi guys!

I’m very excited about your plans to discuss older games, as I am a Wii gamer (no other consoles or handhelds) and play a lot of the ones you mentioned last week.

I’ve been listening to your podcast for a year or so, and left a comment on iTunes about the audio quality and structure. My suggestions were (1) for a more structured podcast with shorter sections, and always make sure you say the name of the game before and after each bit of discussion in case the listener misses it, and (2) the audio balance is all up the whack, you need to use compression of something to balance the levels so I don’t have to keep constantly fiddling the volume.

Regarding Metroid Other M, I thought you might talk more about the 2D-3D design of the game, with some elements being very like a 2D platformer.

Looking forward to future discussions! Games I would be interested to hear about include The Last Story, Xenoblade, Prince of Persia Forgotten Sands Wii, Pandora’s Tower, Fragile Dreams, Tales of Symphonia, Muramasa, Okami, Monster Hunter Tri, Sin and Punishment 2, Rune Factory Frontier, Little King’s Story, and Final Fantasy Crystal Bearers.

    Cheers

    Simon
