THQ set to close its Australian office

Sad news today as it has been announced that THQ will be closing it’s local Australia offices in Melbourne. It’s not happening right away but will be happening over the next few months. All Interactive Entertainment will be taking over the distribution of THQ titles going forward.

“The evolution of our distribution model in the Asia Pacific region will allow us to increase our reach with a lower cost model,” said Ian Curran, THQ’s EVP, Global Publishing. “AIE is a trusted business partner with whom we have worked with for many years as our distributor in New Zealand. We believe the company will benefit from AIE’s backing and comprehensive distribution network across Australia.”

A number of jobs are believed to be lost in this move, this is on top of job losses earlier this year. THQ has not been going well as of late, sadly it’s our pals in the Melbourne office who are now suffering.

We hope the team there who’ve helped Vooks over the years land safely elsewhere.

Who’s looking after distribution of Capcom’s products in Australia then? Will that too be handled by AIE or will Capcom split up distribution?

This is another unfortunate casualty in the local gaming scene. I still expect to see more of this over the coming years until there are only a few major companies left. It’s unfortunate but that’s the reality of the local industry these days.
