The Wonderful 101 sales in Japan are anything but wonderful

The results are in and The Wonderful 101 has failed to set the charts alight in Japan. It has debuted in 14th place with a total sales of 5.258. To be clear, while its technically its debut, only counts for the first two days on sale as the game was launched just two days before the end of the week.

To put these figures into perspective somewhat, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team which launched a few weeks back sold more than 20,000 copies that week, Animal Crossing which launched last year in Japan sold 8,000 copies over the same period.

No one expected The Wonderful 101 to sell millions, but these numbers won’t be causing and champagne to pop. Ouch.

Why is it being compared to 3DS game debuts?
There are practically no Wii U owners by comparison to the 3DS.

I have to agree, comparing with 3DS sales isn’t fair at all.

5000 copies over 2 days isn’t that bad. I say we wait for the following week’s sales of The Wonderful 101 before we can say for certain that it bombed.

Still, I can’t help but wonder why Platinum focused their attention on finishing 101 before Bayonetta 2. Surely Bayo makes more sense to release first on such a struggling console, considering it already has a fanbase. This would then create a new fanbase for Platinum Wii U games and then BAM they hit them with 101, the world is in complete awe and everyone buys 10 copies each.

Plus they only got about 30,000 units. Game got a perfect score from Famitsu, which is nothing to scoff at. I’d guess these figures don’t include digital sales either, considering the availability of the game we might be surprised with the ratio of retail/digital sales for this one.

Yeah, it’s very possible these charts don’t include digital sales, and just imagine how many people would have taken advantage of that ‘30% off W101 on eShop when you buy Pikmin 3’.

I completely agree with you Dave.
Bayonetta 2 had that mini trailer since before the Wii U launch.
I imagine they’d have two teams of people working on it and the delay for Bayonetta may have something to do with rendering the graphics?
It’s not like Nintendo has time to wait for games to be ordered since sales are so low, but since there’s already a fan base for Bayonetta, that would make perfect sense.
I’ve been wondering all year that it would become multi-platform too as I don’t think it will sell much on here.
It’s an amazing game, but Bayonetta was never released on Wii so I really wonder how many Wii owners will even buy the sequel.
Maybe they even want 101 to build the Platinum fanbase before Bayonetta 2 comes out because of this?
I definitely will buy it though, it’s going to be amazing! ^_^

I agree with everyone on here, that comparing it to a 3ds game when the 3ds has a big fan base already. compare it to Funky barn and youd have amazing results XD

I do agree with the idea of releasing Bayonetta 2 before 101, it just seems more logical.
i have this feeling that Bayonetta 2 will sell well, i mean if people love video games so much (and bayonetta fans think they are a god send to humanity) they will have a passion for all consoles. i had all three consoles at one stage and i played xbox and wii games all the time (wasn’t a fan of Sony controllers XD) which means there are people who will go out and buy bayonetta because they played all types of console games, even if you haven’t played it just watch ‘Bayonetta vs Joy’ on youtube and you’ll say to yourself yep ive gotta get this game haha.

Coz, if you can’t tell they were spoon fed the pikmin engine and told to make a game on it. Uninspired as it is.

Anyone who things that it’s like Pikmin is clearly ignorant about The Wonderful 101. They share 1 thing in common: a bunch of guys following behind the leader.

    Seriously how ignorant are you?
