This week in People who just dont get it, Insomniac Games (Resistance) CEO Brian Hastings has spoken out regarding his views of the Xbox 360 and the Wii on the companies message board. While the post details at lengthwhy he thinks the Wii is a fad, in the end he summarises his view of the Wii.
More Inside! The Wii is currently riding on a massive wave of mainstream attention and has been purchased by lots of people who dont normally play games. But how many of those people who are hooked on Wii Sports will also buy Wii Need For Speed? Mainstream fads usually run their course within a year. As the honeymoon period fades, the Wii will be going up against more and more graphically impressive games on the PS3 and Xbox 360. More people will be buying HD televisions and looking for the most immersive and stunning experiences available. For these reasons, I think the Wii will be more successful than the GameCube or N64 but in the long run will still be outsold by the PS3.
Hastings says that like Furbies and Tickle Me Elmo, because something is easy to pick up and different to what we have had before it will eventually drop off as the Fad Fades. Sure the Wii cant run with Wii Sports forever but unlike Furbies the Wii has software which can be changed for a completely different experience.
And just because people are buying HDTVs doesnt mean they are going to use everything with HD, most people buy a HD and use the internal tuner or a set top box or DVD player with composite. The Wiis graphical prowess (or lack of) has thus far shown not to be a problem with consumers.
Sean’s Comment: Does anyone actually pay attention to these nameless idiots anymore? Maybe they are just sour that they published a game on a console that is not doing so well at the moment. By buying a HDTV the game is not going to play any better, visually it will look impressive but if you expect highly evolved gameplay that challenges you like never before you’re looking in the wrong place. The Wii is the only system to change and better the way we play games, the competitors are simply doing what has been done before.
