The NX won’t be sold for a loss – Kimishima

The Wii U was an outlier when it came to making Nintendo profit. It was one of the first consoles Nintendo sold that didn’t make one for every unit it sold. The tablet controller saw to that. Nintendo was still losing money on the Wii U in August 2013 and it took nearly another year, May 2014 to break even.

Nintendo says NX will be different, speaking a a recently Nintendo investor Q&A Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has said “We are not thinking of launching the hardware at a loss, Selling at a loss at launch would not support the business.”

This could mean a number of things, including that the hardware isn’t as powerful as we expect or it could contain more off the shelf (and therefore cheaper) components. With the Japanese yen in a more healthy state now that it was in 2011 Nintendo should find it easier to find a profit – no matter what happens.
