Square Enix reveal The Four Warriors of Light for DS

A new Final Fantasy spin-off has been unveiled, offering DS owners an exclusive new JRPG adventure

‘The Four Warriors of Light: A Final Fantasy Anecdote’ was found in an issue of Japanese magazine ‘Shonen Jump’ and seemingly ruins the surprise of a countdown teaser site hosted on Square Enix’s Japanese website. The teaser site is still counting down, and has been frequently updated with additional characters appearing in the game in the lead-up to an official announcement.

The RPG will utilize a familiar menu-selection, turn-based combat style and feature character design very similar to that used in the DS remakes of Final Fantasy III and IV. Screenshots suggest that the touch-screen is employed heavily in selecting attacks and strategy, in favour of the d-pad controlled scheme used in previous Final Fantasy games on DS. The title ‘Four Warriors of Light’ hints towards established norms within the Final Fantasy mythology, and follows the quest of a young boy trying to save a princess, and ultimately, the world.

Zero points for originality there, Squeenix, but the art style is adorable, and the established combat mechanics are sure to be as fun and robust as they ever were. An eventual western release is likely, but as yet unannounced.
