Smash Direct: Spirits and new story mode ‘World of Light’ revealed

It’s wasn’t just the rest of the fighter roster that was a mystery with Super Smash Bros Ultimate. We still had to find out what the mysterious Spirits mode is and was there going to be an adventure mode. The answer to that one is, yes!

First up, what is Spirits Mode?

Spirits are power-ups that you can apply to any of the fighters in the game. The spirits come in the form of many different characters from years of video game history. Some of the characters included are from Nintendo games, Sonic games, Metal Gear Solid, Captain Rainbow, Megaman, Metal Gear Solid, Pokemon, Shantae, Ouendan – everything. It looks like a great way to celebrate the crossover nature of the game includes a lot more characters and gives everyone a look in, without having to make them a trophy.

It looks like there’s a LOT of these spirits to collect.

There different types of spirits, there are primary spirits and only one can be applied to a character at anytime time. Support spirits can be attached to the primary spirits to give them even further support.

In the world of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, many video game characters lose their forms and become “spirits” that serve as a power-up of sorts for a player’s main playable fighter. There is a massive number of wildly different spirits, ranging from Chibi-Robo to Dr. Wily to Tails to Revolver Ocelot, with the giant list of characters going on and on. Players can equip primary and support spirits to power up or add additional abilities like speed or strength to their fighter during battles. Mixing and matching spirits will help players get the upper hand against certain opponents, adding quite a bit of strategy to battles. Equipping a spirit is similar to equipping a charm or accessory in an RPG. It’s a way for players to enjoy a massive amount of additional video game characters outside of selecting them as playable fighters.

The main way to acquire spirits is to win Spirit Battles. After winning a Spirit Battle, players will have to complete a roulette challenge to acquire that spirit.

Sakurai also revealed the games singleplayer story mode during the Direct. It’s called World of Light, and to temper expectation, Sakurai has said it’s not as big as Subspace Emissary from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The trailer for this mode is something straight out of Infinity War. We won’t spoil it, just watch.

Thanos would be proud.

What's your reaction?
Oh wow!

I get why he doesn’t want to do another story mode, after the cutscenes were thrown up on YouTube, but it makes me sad the story won’t be as big as Subspace. Subspace was great, but this trailer is AMAZING, it’s basically what I want from the final battle of Kingdom Hearts 3 but with the characters swapped out, and if there’s anyone I’d trust with telling a good story with all these random characters working together it would be him.
