Ryan Reynolds to star in the titular role in Detective Pikachu movie

Just when you think 2017 can’t get any stranger, Hollywood throws a curveball.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Ryan Reynolds has been cast as the lead role in the upcoming live action Detective Pikachu film. Reynolds, most famous for his role in the Green Lantern Deadpool movie, will reportedly be providing his voice to the role, as well as a motion capture performance.

The Detective Pikachu film, produced by Legendary Pictures, was reported on way back in July of last year, but details have been relatively scarce since, with the only revelations in the meantime being that Goosebumps (2015) director Rob Letterman is set to direct. Although it is far from the first Pokémon movie, it is the first to be shot in live action, which will no doubt be an interesting experience for all involved.

Meanwhile, there’s still no news on the Detective Pikachu game coming to the west, but it would be a smart move to launch the game alongside the film when it eventually releases. Until that happens, all we can do is wait and mourn the fact that Danny Devito was robbed of this important role.
