Rumour: Upwards of AU$350 for Wii?

by Toby MizziAugust 8, 2006

I’ve been working for gaming websites for some years now and I have never posted a rumour from a personal source of my own. However, a source who works within a retail gaming store has contacted me with some interesting information. Naturally, you may think very little of this information as it sounds like another crazed fanboy who has a friend of a friend of a friend. It’s up to you what you believe, but I urge you read on and consider the information.

According to my source – who got this information from a product meeting – gaming retailers have been told to expect a price anywhere between AU$350 and $500 for the Wii. Obviously, this price bracket is much higher then what we would expect. In fact, a price of AU$500 is not much less then the Xbox360 which could seriously hurt Nintendo. However it is doubtful the Wii will retail for that price, but our source emphasised that this information is coming from Head Office.

Secondly, in what is better news, the Wii preorder targets for this particular chain of stores are higher then the PS3. In fact, the preorder target for the Wii is almost as much as the PS3 and Xbox360 (at launch) combined.

Once again, I stress that I am not one to post information from someone who I do not have faith in. That said, this information may have been accurate for my source, but could change come launch day. In any case, a $350+ price tag isn’t what we’ve been expecting, so stay tuned with Vooks.net for anymore information that surfaces.

Even though we reported the $350 plus price, we still dont beleive the final price will be anything near that. However it just shows that Nintendo and retailers still dont know the final price.

First gaming experiences were with my older brother playing Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Master System and Sega Mega Drive. I was about 12 years old when the PS1 and the N64 were just about to be released, and I wanted to get a PS1 based on my experience playing some demo PS1 games at a Video Games Heaven store. On the day we came to lay buy the PS1, they had demo N64 consoles set up in the middle of the shopping centre and we naturally took some time to sample the goods. Dad, who barely played games, decided that the N64 would be a better console and I have never looked back since then. Don't get the time to play games as much as I did when I was younger, though I still enjoy nothing more than sitting back on the couch and being absorbed into a totally different world.
