You knew it was going to happen, but DS games that only work in a DSi are allegedly on the way.

Back at this year’s Game Developers Conference Nintendo said they had DSi only games in the works, and they might be hitting sooner rather than later.

Kotaku has learned that DSi exclusive games are indeed on the way and, unlike the “DSi Enhanced” games we’ve seen from the likes of Ubisoft so far, they will only work on the DSi.

These DSi only games will apparently come in all-white game cases to differentiate themselves from normal DS games, as well as being clearly marked as DSi only. We imagine this will be done in the same way as the Gameboy Color exclusive titles were done in the past. The DSi only cards will also be white, again standing out from the typical dark grey of the DS cards. It’s not yet known if these DSi only games can or will use the boosted speed of the DSi, though.

This is risky move from Nintendo. While the DSi is selling well, the majority of Nintendo DS owners are ones that still have the DS Lite, and even the DS phat style consoles. That means Nintendo will be excluding a big majority of people who own DSes and could cause confusion. That being said, this move isn’t without precedent, as the Gameboy Color did the same thing back in the 90s.
