Reggie talks Wii Fit in America, More games to use Balance board
In a new interview, Nintendo of Americas president has revealed some meaty information on Wii Fit before its release in America on May 19. While the Wii Fit package was around $83US in Japan at launch, Reggie says that the Wii Fit package has still not been finalised for America, but should still be under $100US. The boards weight and exchange rate closer to release will be the deciding factors on the final price. More inside When asked if Wii Fit would have the same selling power as it had in Japan, Fils-Aime has said that he believes that the American focus and psyche on being fit and the localisations made to the game will help the games sales to match Japans to the point that they have over a million units prepared for launch. Wii Fit is important to the Nintendo Year, just as important as Smash Bros and Mario Kart Wii says Fils-Aime, however Wii Fit specifically in our mind is the follow-on title for the expanded audience. Nintendo sees the title as the next game the expanded audience will be getting hooked on and Nintendo will be promoting that to its full capacity. This includes segments on morning national TV programs (along with traditional prime time advertising) with a skew to the female demographics. Theyre even trying to game on Oprah. But its not just the ladies Nintendo are trying to woo; its the hardcore gamer as well. We expect the core to be thrilled with Wii Fit because it has such a wide range of experiences. It’s more than just the aerobic or stretching exercises — there are quite a number of other mini-games, if you will, embedded in the software that we think will speak to the core consumer.
Bundling a Wii and Wii Fit together was also proposed to Reggie and while he believes its a good idea, the current shortages on console just doesn’t make sense to even contemplate it right now. He also added with WiiWare, Mario Kart and Smash Bros also available in the first half of the year its going to be still difficult to find a Wii.
Wii Fit is going to be a big expense for a lot of people, and Reggie says that you should feel good about purchasing your Wii Fit and Balance Board as there is currently 10 games in development that will take advantage of the board. What exactly those games are remains to be seen. Finishing off, Reggie says that between all the games coming out shortly, there is something for everyone.
