Reggie says to “stay tuned” for info about carrying over purchases to Switch

One of the biggest sore points with Nintendo’s digital offerings is the lack of cross-buy and support easily redownloading your purchased software on new hardware. It’s easy on literally every other digital store front in the world – so what’s going to happen with the Switch?

Nintendo decided not to talk about their digital store front or account system at all during the presentation on Friday. However an interview on Friday after the event by Wired has uncovered some possible good news.

Wired: I hear from a lot of people like me who’ve spent a thousand dollars on classic games on Wii and Wii U…

Fils-Aime: That’s a lot of money.

Wired: It is a lot of money! Is there going to be a discount for us if we buy the games again on Switch?

Fils-Aime: What I would say first is, we recognize that some of our most passionate fans have spent quite a bit, whether it’s with Virtual Console on Wii or Wii U, and we recognize that consumers are rightly concerned about moving to Nintendo Switch without backward compatibility. My comment is: Stay tuned, we understand the concern, more information to come.

There’s 40-some odd days between now and launch. There are more details to come. And at that point we’ll be able to define all of those various details of that online experience.

Hopefully we can see a Nintendo Direct or information burst before the launch to sort all this out.

The discount had better be, hey you already bought the game on wii u, have it again on switch for free.. if I have to pay anything to get a game I already own again, I am gonna be pissed..

This is actually a massive deal maker for me if they bring in some sort of upgrade scheme for having bought games already on the Wii U.

I feel a bit jipped seeing a better version of mario kart 8 I need to pay full price for again.

But you don’t “need” to at all. It is a choice; if you don’t want to pay for a new game, then play your old one and keep your money.

Further to that the new battle mode, variety of courses and ability to play in handheld mode should justify the upgrade. Nintendo is a business, not a charity.

Also that word is spelled “gypped” and is in fact a racial pejorative. Might not want to use it.

At the very least, VC games should be free for those who purchased them on other systems. As for games like mk8…I suppose it was like those xbone and ps4 owners who were tempted into buying HD remakes for their consoles, gonna have to pay the price…
