Senator Lundy tables record-breaking petition, light is visible at the end of the tunnel

The EveryonePlays campaign, started by PALGN and GAME, garnered 89,120 signatures in support of an R18+ rating for games; it has now been tabled by pro-R18+ Senator Kate Lundy. The Attorneys-General meeting on December 10 is expected to focus on how relevant the R18+ rating is for gamers and parents across the country.

Senator Lundy took a series of appropriate jabs at the current rating system, outlining how very backwards Australia is compared to the UK and the US. Her main points included the need for an equivalent R18+ rating as present for films, the ‘grey area’ regarding which MA15+ titles are really suitable for your child, the strength of the recent petition, and how the current system encourages importation and, worse, illicit distribution of material deemed ‘illegal’ in Australia. The rather compelling speech can be read or viewed here.

GAME and PALGN bigwigs Rob Lukic and Roland Kulen (respectively) reinforced the raised points and added their support to the argument. We expect to hear big things from the upcoming meeting!
