PowerA Joy-Con Comfort Grip Review for Nintendo Switch

Getting grippy with it.

The Joy-Con Grip that comes with your Nintendo Switch is the ‘default’ controller for the Switch when it’s played in TV mode and it works just fine. It’s certainly not the best solution, that belongs to the Pro Controller certainly, but maybe that’s too expensive or the grips aren’t comfortable for you.

Nintendo sells a charging Joy-Con Grip separately and it’s exactly the same as the one that comes with the Switch, except for the whole charging part. That’s still pretty pricey, so what’s next?

That’s where these PowerA Joy-Con Comfort Grips are really going to shine. They fulfil the same purpose as the grips that come with your Switch but they’re cheaper, and they have more a ‘controller’ feel. The grips are not only more curved and larger, but also they have a rubberised grip on the back as well for extra feel. The spacing between the two Joy-Cons are also just that little bit wider; it’s not much really, but it does feel a better distance apart.

There’s really only a couple of problems with these things, the first being this little ‘ridge’ right under the ZL and ZR buttons. It just feels weird to have the trigger there and then a hard ridge right under, it’s more of a problem for when you’re not using the buttons – there’s no comfortable place to rest your fingers. The other problem and this really only applies to the red one, it doesn’t match the red of the Neon Red Joy-Cons. I guess they were going for a two-toned effect but it just looks nasty. Pretty much every other combination is fine. If you’re really daring, put the blue Joy-Cons in the red shell. It’s Mario!

These grips are cheap, they’re comfortable and probably best used for if you really hate the grip that comes with the Switch or to have as the ‘second’ controller for when your friends bring their Switch over.

If you’re after a second ‘controller’ these will work just fine and they’re only about $20 here in Australia.

Thanks to Bluemouth Interactive for supplying these for review. You can buy them from EB Games, JB Hi-Fi and Gamesmen just to name a few.
