During its 7 minute Direct presentation last night Nintendo took the wraps off the 8th generation of Pokemon games – Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield. While details were scarce we did get a look at the game in action, the new region and the new starters.

The game is set in the Galar Region which has a very industrial revolution era look to it. Here’s the full map.

Galar.

The new starters were revealed to be the Chimp Pokemon Grookey, a Rabbit Pokemon called Scorbunny and a Water-lizard called Sobble.

Nintendo confirmed the game will be released worldwide in late 2019.

Looks very pretty, but can’t help but be a bit put out by the fact that random battles are back after Let’s Go and the map looks a bit linear. As long as they cut down on cutscenes in this one, it should be an improvement on Sun and Moon at least.

I like the London/steampunk vibes on this one. I still think the best pokemon switch game will be the next gen after this, it usually takes Game Freak one game to get used to the new system (not including let’s go games)

I was really hoping for something more along the lines of Breath Of The Wild but with Pokemon as I think this format is starting to get stale.

Can’t say I love that bland, 3D JRPG art style.
