Nicalis next WiiWare game gets a new name as we learn a little more about it.

Nicalis’, the indie developers responsible for the upcoming WiiWare port of Cave Story, have released some info and a new name for their upcoming WiiWare physics-based puzzle-platformer, NightSky, formerly known as Night Game.

This new puzzle-platformer promises an intuitive pick up and play style that will please both hardcore and casual gamers. Gameplay requires players to use the realistic physics engine to their advantage to succeed. The player controls a mysterious black sphere through the 2D environments, like a sidescrolling Super Monkey Ball. There are no enemies or bosses, just pure puzzle-platforming gameplay. There are unique ‘vehicles’ that the orb can ride in also feature.

The game is divided up into 10 ‘expansive and unique levels’, which are further broken up into 13 additional areas, which should add up to a decent 6 hours of gameplay. There’s also an unlockable second quest that mixes up the level structure and will ‘offer a formidable task for even the hardest of the hardcore players.’ NightSky employs a picturesque silhouetted visual style that contrasts the foreground and background and includes some brilliant night-themed environments. An acoustic-jazz soundtrack composed and recorded by experimental jazz-musician Chris Schlarb has also been confirmed, which from the video clips on the site, sounds extremely good and fits the game perfectly.

Gameplay videos and screenshots were released today via the games official site. NightSky was a finalist in the 2009 Independent Games Festival.

An Australian release date is yet to be announced but it should be out by the end of year. Hopefully Cave Story will be out by then too.
