In tonight’s surprise Mario Kart 8 themed Nintendo Direct the company took the wraps off nearly all of the features in the game, including Mario Kart TV and other online features.

As expected Mario Kart TV will allow you to view highlights from your races, you can the replay in slow motion and in reverse if you so wish. Once you’ve got some highlights worth sharing you can then upload it, along with a message or drawing to Miiverse. Race highlights can also be uploaded to YouTube and sharing to social media networks from within the game, to upload to YouTube you’ll need a Google account of course.

Nintendo also detailed the rest of the online modes in the game and it’s what you’d hope would be there and more. You can play against global players, players within your region, friends and even setup and play within tournaments. There’s voice chat before and after races with friends, but if you don’t like to talk you can send pre-written messages.

Mario Kart 8 features a pretty heavy tournament feature. You’ll be able to setup and join in on tournaments and these tournaments can be configured to the nth degree. Teams or no teams, which items and no items, what type of vechicles, control method restrictions, CPU or no CPU and more are all customisable. Tournaments can also be set to run at different times and can be repeated weekly, monthly and more. Once a tournament is over the rankings are displayed and the winners crowned. Each tournament can be searched for in the game or also has a code to enter so you don’t have to search.

Ghosts are back in Mario Kart 8 as well and this time you’ll be rewarded with a Miiverse stamp if you beat a staff ghost.

Mario Kart 8 is out in Australia on May 31st. Just a month to go now.
