Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy DX coming to Switch

Level-5 said it was going all-in on the Switch and now they’ve announced their next game for the system.

Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy DX, which is a very long name for a game, is coming to the Switch on August 9th in Japan. The game was originally released on mobile and the Nintendo 3DS last year. Being that it was released on platforms that used the touchscreen, the Switch version is getting traditional controls as well.

There will also be a new NFC capable toy that’ll work with the game. No word yet on a release date for the west, but it’s already translated so technically shouldn’t take too long.

I have only just started playing Miracle Mask (I started a new file because it had been so long that I had totally forgotten everything about the game) and I had a strong feeling that this would happen. The games look beautiful in 3D, so I was quite disappointed that Lady Layton had no stereoscopic 3D *plus* paid DLC, which put me off to the point that I had considered skipping the game entirely. I probably would have considered the mobile version seeing as I could use it on multiple devices and that it has a much, much higher resolution than what the 3DS is capable of.

It seemed like such an inexcusably lazy mobile port which not only lacked 3D but had paid DLC, a first for the series. At this point in the 3DS’s lifespan, the only significant advantage that it has over the Switch is its 3D display. If that is not being utilised, then I see no point in buying 3DS software when said software could theoretically be released on Switch at a higher resolution with local multiplayer and other goodies (the “DX” in the title implies that the Switch version will contain previously released DLC on the cartridge).

I look forward to grabbing this if it arrives in the West. I really like the idea of being able to play a Layton game on the big screen. Level-5 would be absolutely stupid to excise touch screen controls from the version in favour of traditional controls. Even Bayonetta (of all things) is fully playable with touch controls.

Where is the paid DLC in the 3DS version? I finished the game, and didn’t see any paid DLC (there’s free, downloadable DLC puzzles, though).

If there is paid DLC, then it’s pretty well hidden, and didn’t detract from the game at all. But, bizarrely, looking at the internet just now, there’s comments everywhere decrying the paid DLC.

Really, I think this is an “internet fact” that is, in reality, just not true.
