E3 2018: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features every fighter in Smash history

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is the Super Smash Bros game coming to the Switch. It’s out December 7th and it’s called Ultimate for a reason.

Ultimate features every single fighter from the history of Super Smash Bros. Snake is back (and voiced by David Hayter), Ice Climbers are back, everyone from the N64 to the Wii U are here. All of the characters have received a facelift as well, Mario has Cappy and his Wedding outfit, Link and Zelda both have their look from Breath of the Wild and there is also now the female Pikachu – Masahiro Sakurai went through a LOT of character updates in the 25-minute video.

Not only is everyone back but a ton of stages from previous games are returning and have been updated with new graphics. GameCube Controller support is back, and there is a new re-issue of the controllers with a slightly different design. Every single amiibo will also work in the game.

Not content with every character ever, Masahiro Sakurai also introduced Ridley from Metroid – apparently, he’s not too big.

We’ll have more on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate when we get hands-on with it later this week.

Early into the trailer, I suspected that EVERY character would return (in the absence of fresh content), and Lo and behold, EVERY character is back. It seemed the most logical next step given that content is king for a game like this, and while they did spend a little too much time stressing the intricacies of each fighter, the sheer amount of content looks to be absolutely ridiculous. And it made no sense to have a whole series of Smash amiibo that would not be compatible with the new game, so I had no question in my mind from the beginning that this was going to be an enhanced port of the Wii U game with full compatible with the existing series of amiibo. Those who thought that the developers were going to start from zero are absolutely delusional and completely underestimate the time and expense involved in modern AAA video game production.

Good news all round for Smash Switch. I have no doubt that there will be another onslaught of amiibo to cover all of the new and returning characters. 8 player Smash on the go will be virtually unplayable in tabletop mode (it’s hard enough to discern your character on a TV in the Wii U version), but it’s wonderful that the option is there. I am also really excited about the customisable voices for Mii fighters. I find it a touch curious that they hadn’t renamed the Wii Fit Trainer, which suggests that perhaps Nintendo are retiring the “Wii Fit” series (which would be a tremendous shame as I would really love to see successors to the Wii Sports and Wii Fit series). Perhaps Nintendo will retain the “Wii” branding for casual focused games in the future. I guess we’ll find out in time.

With Smash Ultimate set to appease a huge audience, I anticipate that this will quickly become the fastest and best selling entry in the series of all time.
