E3 2012: Wii U dual GamePad support confirmed

At the E3 press conference this morning, Nintendo confirmed that the Wii U would support up to two GamePads.

Previously Nintendo Japan President Satoru Iwata had expressed his opposition to two GamePad support, stating that the price casual consumers would have to pay to take advantage of the extra controller might be prohibitive to their adoption of the system.

Technical feasibility was also a concern, particularly in regards to frame rate drops and processor speeds, but it looks like that’s all been sorted out by Nintendo’s engineers.

While most of the demos at E3 focus on single GamePad integration, the introduction of a second GamePad is welcome news for developers, and will encourage exciting new gameplay options that aren’t possible with the one GamePad. Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime promises we’ll hear more about these dual GamePad experiences in the future.
