E3 2008: Nintendo announces MotionPlus enabled Wii Sports Resort

by James MitchellJuly 15, 2008

To complement the recently revealed Wii MotionPlus accessory, Nintendo today announced during their conference an exciting new development – that a Wii Sports sequel is on the way and it will fully utilise the ambitious peripheral. Coming packaged with every copy of the game, Wii MotionPlus will also be available to sell separately. As for the Wii Sports sequel, it takes a much more beach related theme, similar to the recently released Big Beach Sports for Wii. Titled Wii Sports Resort, the sequel promises to give players the most responsive and realistic experience possible. More inside

At the conference only three sports were revealed. The first was Disc Dog, which was essentially a game of fetch with the dogs seen in the Wii Fit jogging sequences. Cammie Dunaway demonstrated the sport live during the conference and showed gamers that amazing accuracy in the translation of her movements to her Mii on screen. Next up was Power Cruising, which is essentially Jet Skiing. Fan favourite Reggie tried this using both the MotionPlus and the Nunchuck to accelerate and steer a jet ski through rough waters – though it must be asked if a similar attachment exists for the nunchuk or if it’ll just be left as it is. Finally, Cammie and Reggie demonstrated something amazing – Sword Fighting. Movements appeared on screen in an increasingly realistic fashion – confirming our wildest dreams – the Wii will soon have 1:1 motion recognition. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the sword could be used with enough precision to sharpen a pencil manually, an interesting development for the peripheral.

Wii Sports Resort was announced for a Spring 2009 release, and we can only assume that’s for our American audience. It is currently unknown when the title will make it’s way to our Aussie shores, but it’s pretty certain that it will at some point.
