We have updated the FAQ with photos of the DS Lite Australian Box What is a DS Lite?
According to Nintendo Australia the DS Lite is new DS system which “”features brighter screens, is approximately two-thirds the size of the original Nintendo DS and about 20 percent lighter. It also features a larger stylus and repositioned button layout, all the while maintaining all of the original Nintendo DS features, as well as screen size”” All of which is true, however you already knew that you diligent Nintendo Fans right? Anyway moving on…
What does the DS Lite Look Like?
The DS Lite is smaller, thinner, more iPody looking DS. It has a smooth plasticity front with the DS logo embossed on the top. However when you open the Lite it has a matte finish so it doesn’t slip out of your hands. When it closes the DS Lite closes with no gap to form a pefect edge. Here is a Picture of the Polar White DS Lite.
So Polar White, the only colour where getting?
At this stage yes, due to the high demand in Japan it has taken us this long to get it here. We are very fortunate to get it now and for the price (not $50 more like in the UK) we are getting. Of course this doesn’t mean we will never get any other colours you will just have to wait for them.
How much does a DS Lite Cost? Any Deals or Bundles?
The DS Retails for $199.99AU, there is no bundles from Nintendo Australia, however many stores are selling the DS Lite below retail, make sure you shop around before you plunge in. Also just because there is no bundles now doesn’t mean there won’t be in the future.
What comes in the DS Lite Box?
- 1 Nintendo DS Lite
- One AC Adapter (Works on DS Lite Only)
- Instructions for DS Lite and Pictochat
- Health and safety Precautions
- Extra Stylus
Also as a Bonus, Australian’s will get a free demo of Brain Training: Train Your Brain In Minutes a day. That is only available in Australian DS Lites. However Australia did miss out on the White Padless Strap, no word on why.
So what does the DS Lite packaging look like?
While Nintendo Australia has not shown off the Australian packaging, reports from retailers tell us its the same as the American Box pictured below, expect it to have a sticker or some sort of notification of the free Brain Training Demo.
It’s smaller and lighter, what is it missing?
Nothing is missing from the actual DS Lite as opposed to the DS Phat, its the same DS you’ve been playing for over a year just smaller, lighter and brighter.
Wait it has a brighter screen! Won’t that mean the battery life is less?
You’ll be happy to know Nintendo has increased the battery to 1000 mAh instead of 850 mAh of the DS Phat. This now means the DS Lite battery in most cases will last longer then the DS Phat. Because you only need the lightest brightness setting in the sun you can easily run it on level 3 and its still brighter then a DS Phat.
Nintendo Australia has informed us that level 2 is the equivalent of the DS Phats brightness, with level one being an “”economy mode””. Here is what life you can expect for the brightness levels.
Brightness Approximated Continuous Play
1st level 15-19 hours
2nd level 10-15 hours
3rd level 7-11 hours
4th level 5-8 hours
Do I need to charge the DS Lite before I play it for the first time?
The DS Lite comes half charged, while you can play it as soon as you get it (or transfer info over) it is recommended you let it drain once before starting to charge it, remember you wont get the full battery life until a few charge/discard cycles. Try to charge it to the max and then drain it before recharging it for the first 5 of so times.
Will my DS Phat/Micro/GBA SP Chargers work on the DS Lite?
Nintendo has seen fit to change the charger on the DS Lite; none of the previous AC Adapters will work on the DS Lite.
With the smaller body are the Screens any Smaller?
The screens are the same sizes and resolution as the DS Phat, also the bottom screens is raised slightly so when shut the two screens a sealed together to keep dust and particles out, very neat.
Is it true GBA Games/Rumble Packs stick out?
Yes they do unfortunately. With the smaller form factor Nintendo was unable to avoid this. However Nintendo has provided a GBA Slot Cover so you can keep dust out while retaining the sleek look of the DS Lite when there is no GBA games insterted.
Will the DS Lite suffer from Dead Pixels?
Like all devices with LCD screens DS Lites are susceptible to dead pixels, however if you end up with one with a dead/stuck pixel pack up your DS Lite and return it to where you bought it (Remember the Receipt!) Remember under Australian law the shop must take it back if the product is faulty/not functioning properly. If you live far away from the shop make sure you turn it on before you leave to test if the screen has any dead or stuck pixels.
What about Wifi Will my Friend Codes Get reset?
Fret not you can transfer your Wifi Settings and Friend Codes to your New DS, While it doesnt actually transfer your Code so to speak, it does it a bit Different let me explain. When you insert a WFC game it creates a set with that card and your DS, the transfer simply copies the ID of the DS, so when you reinsert the card it is none the wiser that it is in a new DS.
So VOOK you say how does one person do this? Simple, boot up any WFC game ( remember you only have to do this once) and navigate to the WFC options, tap Options, tap Transfer Nintendo WFC Configuration then click OK. On the second DS Lite boot up your DS with NO GAME in it, goto Download Play and Tap on “”Nintendo WFC Configuration Transfer”” Its that simple! Remember if you are trading in your DS Phat to do this when you take it in on the day to transfer. Again you only have to do it with one game. Also your old DS will no longer have you FC information.
False DS Lite Rumours
- Pictochat and the entire firmware of the DS Lite is exactly the same, The only differences is that the “”Sun”” Icon in the Bottom Left hand corner of the screen now changes between the 5, including off) brightness levels not even the DS on the “”GBA Screen Selection”” has changed to a Lite.
- There is nothing in Dust Cover of the DS Lite, the reason it has connectors is to keep them clean.
- Opera DS is not included or bundled with the DS Lite, it will be sold separately. At a later date.
