Zelda Wii U all about ‘Rethinking Series Conventions’

The Wind Waker HD wasn’t the only Zelda game to get confirmed during the last Nintendo Direct. No, Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma revealed that his team are working on a new Wii U version.

This is no big surprise. What is a surprise is what they plan to do with the series. It looks like Aonuma is really keen to mix up the series.

Here’s what he had to say.
Our mission in developing this new Zelda game for Wii U is quite plainly to rethink the conventions of Zelda. I’m referring to things like the expectation that the player is supposed to complete dungeons in a certain order, or that you’re supposed to play by yourself. The things that we’ve come to take for granted recently.

We want to set aside these ‘conventions’, get back to basics and create a newborn Zelda game so that the players today can best enjoy the real essence of the franchise.

We had actually worked on this kind of challenge with Skyward Sword but we weren’t able to put effort into changing the linear-path structure of the game. I hope to be able to talk to you in more detail about how it will change after I see it come together a bit more.
So it looks like they’re really keen on trying something different and that’s going to take a while. No matter, we’ve got Wind Waker HD for our Zelda fix in between there.

What do you think Nintendo needs to with Zelda?

Make it like Dark Souls. Except not so difficult (that wouldn’t fit Zelda). A connected world where you can explore any dungeon and any town anytime you’d like, that would be a good experiment.

Experiment? Dude, that’s what Zelda used to be like back in the day. But yeah, I’m with that. Big world with lots to explore, in a non-linear manner. An more of an action focus compared to more recent Zelda games.

But now that Aonuma has realised the games need to become non linear again, there’ll be something else that becomes the problem for the game….
