Vookcast Episode #114 – VCR Tape #009: Resident Evil CODE Veronica

Welcome to the first VCR episode of the Vookcast for 2015! For those who are just joining us, VCR stands for Vooks Critical Review! It’s where the team sits down, looks at a (sometimes controversial) title and dissects it in it’s entirety from story to writing to gameplay and presentation!

The topic of the show this time around is Resident Evil CODE: Veronica. Developed by a secondary team who were actually a SEGA subsidiary, CODE: Veronica is one of the more hotly debated Resident Evil titles. Some love it, some hate it. But there’s one thing for sure – it’s not like the other “classic” Resident Evil games. James and Steven dive into the game to work out just why that might be.

The team does the usual – talking about the game’s complicated and convoluted development history (including it’s relation to Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 3, Devil May Cry and even Rockstar Games) as well as the quality and direction of the game’s story and writing. In terms of game design, no stone is left unturned. The effect of character swapping on the gameplay, the place for puzzles and more are discussed in great detail.

There’s even more to it than that, and we hope you’ll enjoy the first VCR for 2015!

Code Veronica is my favorite RE game, seriously.

Capcom’s quality control has been pretty rocky over the years, but good to know they’ve always been consistently cray-cray.

All that information regarding the plethora of projects that were shifted from platform to platform and renamed is awesome titbits!

I’ve never played CV:X, despite owning it on GameCube! After being introduced to the series with Resident Evil 4, I decided I’d play them through chronologically, finished Zero, but got stuck on REmake (a very difficult game). This was a fun reminder that I should go back and beat those gems in my backlog 🙂

I really like this idea, and hope to see some (and time allowing, perhaps participate in the discussion) of controversial games that I have played 🙂
