Super Mario Sunshine (Gamecube) Review

After Super Mario 64 Nintendo fans have been hanging for another romp with Mario, out in the big bad 3D world. The GBA incarnations where good but in the end just updated classic versions. Finally Nintendo answered back with the announcement of Super Mario Sunshine for the GameCube, Finally it has hit Australia, but sadly it may not be as good as first though.

The Story of Super Mario Sunshine like all Mario games plays second to the gameplay. The story in Sunshine is a first for the Mario series and shown at the start of the game through FMV. The games graphics look great and the games hub as well as the rest of Island Delfino look vibrant and lively. However putting the game in just one location does kill off the variety a little, the game tries to have different locations but you still end up with the “tropical island” theme for the entire game.

It’s not bad, but it is not varied. The games water physics and effects are worth taking note of and look great. Each Mario game has something different to separate it from the last and this one has the FLUDD machine attached to Mario’s back. This machine (complete with its own personality) has been developed by none other than same professor who stars in Luigi’s Mansion. The FLUDD machine allows Mario to spray water around to clean up the island as well a launch Mario skyward as a levitation device. The machine is refilled by Mario jumping into a river or stream, or any body of water.

Later on the game has more upgrades for the machine. The sound in Sunshine sadly is its weakest point, it is not bad by any stretch but it is totally unforgettable. Super Mario Sunshine is a good Mario title, a great platformer but a long way from being the best. It is worthy of your money.
