This week in Nintendo NX Rumours – Week 11 2016

We try to avoid posting rumours as much as possible on Vooks, it’s part of our news policy and has been for years. You all seem to love it. Now we’re reaching a critical stage with the Nintendo NX where rumours, speculation and leaks are at a fever pitch. So instead of ignoring it, we’re going to collect them and analyse them.

Rumour: Here’s a fresh leak of the NX’s controller which looks exactly like a patent

This week’s rumour comes in the form of an image. It’s a picture of the alleged NX controller using the ‘free form’ screen technology that Nintendo and Sharp have been working on. These screens allow for an LCD panel to come in many shapes and sizes and even have holes in it (for buttons).

The picture originates from Reddit, and was reposted on Destructoid who did some research into it and found it not to be photoshopped (the controller at least) in any way.

The Verdict

Aside from looking like Stewie Griffin’s head this one doesn’t look too dissimilar to the patent that Nintendo applied for some time back. Which is probably the first sign of it not being legit – nothing ever looks exactly like a patent. Patents are meant to be ideas, not products. The fact that it looks exactly like it is your first big warning.

Secondly, this thing looks more uncomfortable to hold than any other controller we can think of.

What we think has happened here is that someone has made this controller, possibly with help from friends in manufacturing – so the controller isn’t ‘fake’, but it’s probably not the NX controller.

We’ve seen Nintendo prototypes before, they’re usually all old bits and bobs stuck together with sticky tape – they’re not this.
