Metroid: Other M to explore the human side of Samus
Co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto addresses the game’s direction and the series’ success around the world.

In an interview with Famitsu magazine, Sakamoto mused over the unique direction the development team was taking the game. He views the game as a return to the series’ roots, but with various changes. "This Metroid is being developed with the aim of the ideal form of the old Metroid.” Sakamoto also mentioned the move from “2D jump-action” to “3D action” and praises Team Ninja’s experience which has helped facilitate the transition.

Sakamoto admitted that the Metroid series is more successful in the western world than in Japan, but pointed out that Other M would be different to the previous games. “This time we’re strongly depicting the human side of Samus through such things as movies. She’s a strong woman, but she also has a fragile side. We want to make a game whose charms can be felt from the story areas and these human touches as well. It’s an action game, but it’s capable of having a clear emotional side.”

Sakamoto is pleased with the manner in which the development staff collectively tackle problems that sometimes crop up in what is a very large project, and states that it is “progressing extremely well.”

Metroid: Other M is slated for release some time this year in Australia. Summer in Japan.
