Reggie on topping last year’s Wii sales
The Regginator discusses sales, demographics and mature titles among other things.

Recently, Nintendo of America CEO Reggie Fils-Aime, appeared on a Fox News Business segment to talk about its strategies in regards to retaining and expanding its consumer base and getting them to buy more games

The interview, which features game footage and a presenter failing at Zelda, mentions that beating last year’s Wii sales is “gonna be tough”.

“The third year in a generation is typically the strongest year. We’re now in our fourth year, and last year was a record year for the Wii hardware business. So, it’s going to be really tough for us to lap those numbers, but we’re having a great holiday season so far.”

The CEO also spoke openly about increasing the core demographic and how Nintendo plans to attract new audiences and keep their games “fresh” without alienating existing customers.

“We’re fortunate, we’ve got software everywhere from twenty bucks to fifty bucks out there for all of our products. We’re really right in the sweet spot of where the consumer’s willing to spend. And we’re able to keep it there.”

When asked how Nintendo competes with top-selling games like Call of Duty and other violent, graphic games geared at teenage boys, Fils-Aime smoothly replied:

“The fun thing about the Nintendo business is that we have that type of content AND everything else for non-experienced gamers as well. So, we’ve got Call of Duty, we’ve got Grand Theft Auto... but we also have Wii Fit Plus... Wii Sports Resort to make sure that we go literally from 5 to 95.”

Fils-Aime also dodged a question relating to entering the world of gambling as laws in the USA relating to ’adult gaming’ are set to change next year. He points out that, unlike Japan, NOA “just [doesn’t] find it interesting” and so won’t be venturing into that genre.
