Apart from Double Trouble! on the Nintendo DS, Viewtiful Joe has so-far stayed entirely on the Gamecube, on which it received two main titles and a fighting game spin-off. If Hideki Kamiya has his way, though, we could see a continuation of the series, possibly on the Wii or Nintendo’s next console.
Speaking to GameInformer, the developer from Platinum Games revealed that he now doesn’t own the all IPs he has created. "I don’t have the rights to any of the IPs that I’ve made" he said. "They belong to the companies that publish them, and they’re a business so they have a right to exploit those IPs as they want.... However, to be completely honest, I’d love to do them myself."
Okami was a game that he desired to create a sequel for, and others supported him on doing this, but on hearing that Okamiden was in development, he lost any interest. He explains, "Once someone else touches a world that you yourself created it stops being yours. There is no point in making a sequel when the world doesn’t belong to you."
However, all hope isn’t lost for a continuation of one of his old franchises. "Viewtiful Joe is probably all I’ve got left, he says. "That story is incomplete so I’d like to finish it someday. But that would probably be the most difficult one to do."
