Red Steel 2, Rabbids Go Home hands on impressions
Fresh impressions from eGames on two of Ubisoft’s upcoming titles—bonus A Boy and His Blob thoughts.

Red Steel 2

Playing what appeared to be the GamesCom build of the game I didn’t see anything new; however, it was good to finally get hands on with the MotionPlus enabled game. The graphical style is the first thing that stands out and it’s a huge departure from the original, which is a good thing, as it stands out. The game runs most of the time at a silky smooth 60fps and the animation in the main character’s shooting and sword fighting as well as the enemies is fluid.

On the topic of the sword fighting, the games use of MotionPlus is similar to that of the sword fighting in Wii Sports Resort. Don’t think you’ll be able to just spam the waggle—no, it’s all different here in Red Steel 2. You’ll need to slow it down, pace your attacks and parries. The game only required a calibration once at the start, and seemed faultless for the entire segment we played. Shooting was smooth and simple, and little targets on the screen like door locks can be easily pointed to and shot—no jittery pointer like the first game.

The games art style is a little weird, not in a bad way but it’s set in a western style looking world but has modern items in it like a pay phone. You can also smash this pay phone and other items around the world to look for cash and ammo.

Rabbids Go Home

After the last few Rabbid’s games being a bit disappointing, you could be forgiven for this game passing on your radar - but put it back ON your radar as the game is not only extremely hilarious but a ton of fun to play. We sampled two humorously named chapters as you roll your shopping trolley around by your g-string toting rabbid. The game is basically Katamari on crack, well, maybe not bad crazy, but it is pretty zany. As you push your trolley around you collect items off people, including their clothes, generic shop items and basically whatever is lying around. There are goals other than that of collecting items scattered around such as collecting different items for different Rabbids. As you progress you’ll dump your trolley load at the end of the level, where to? Well, straight into the toilet as a band of Rabbids plays a tune on their instruments. Did we mention it was zany?

Since it’s E3 showing this game has been looking good and it’s now only a few weeks away.

A Boy and His Blob

While we have more impressions in our exclusive hands on of the game, I finally got my hands on the game today and I didn’t really want to play it. Why is that? Well, I don’t want to play a cross section of this game in the middle of a noisy hall—but I struggled on anyway. A Boy and His Blog is crazy cute and warm, not only is the game superbly animated and looks like a cartoon but the controls are all simple enough and turning the blob into a parachute, ladder or trampoline is all animated very well.
