The latest firmware released for the Wii is reportedly bricking Wii consoles. The 4.2 update released earlier this week, which killed off homebrew and other modifications (albeit temporarily), is said to be causing problems for Wiis, not only with homebrew, but plain vanilla Wiis, with no homebrew or mods at all.
The problem is to due to error with the actual updating process, so if you have 4.2 already you’re safe, but if you’re on an older version of the firmware we’d recommend not updating at least for the time being.
The firmware update makes changes to the ’boot2’ portion of the Wii. That’s the area, as the name suggests, that lets the Wii boot up and tells it what to do. The new code in the update has been causing write errors, and thus bricking Wiis.
If you’ve updated and your Wii has stopped working, give Nintendo Australia a call, as the update has most likely bricked your Wii and they’ll be the only ones who can fix it at this stage.
