Nintendo Switch case and carry bag review roundup

Nintendo are calling the Switch a home console, that’s fine but there’s no hiding the fact that it’s also extremely portable. You’re going to take it out of the house, that’s the point.

So like any other portable device you’re going to want to protect it. Even if you’re not taking it outside you may want to transport it to your mates place for a Splatoon 2 LAN. Today we’ve got four cases to look at that are all available in Australia thanks to Bluemouth Interactive. We’ve got two smaller cases just for the Switch itself. One big tank of a case for transferring everything you need. Finally, there’s a messenger bag as well which is also a lot less conspicuous than the big case.

These cases are available from JB Hi-Fi, The Gamesmen and other retailers. Big W in fact has them on sale for decent discount as well.

Game Traveller Deluxe Black and Breath of the Wild Blue Deluxe Carry Case

We’ve lumped these two cases together because they’re basically the same, on the inside at least. The black case on the outside features a mesh type fabric, where as the Zelda one (which is also available in black) has a more faux-leather type feel. The Zelda one is also a little bit thicker than the more non-descript black one. The black case has been our ‘daily’ case for the Switch since we got it.

Both cases are rigid and offer a strong design. The little flap inside which can be stuck down with velcro not only secures the console but also provides an added level of protection to the screen. Something that wasn’t a worry after coming from the last decade of clamshell portables from Nintendo. Under the console is the included game cases, with space for up to 8 games. There are also two little storage containers for micro SD cards which fit into the game case, if you’re one to carry around more memory. The top of the lid looks like it could be slimmed down somewhat as there is a big chasm when it’s closed, but it does leave room for a USB-C cable. The one that comes with the Pro Controller fits perfectly in there. It also might have been nice to have a mesh section in there to hold it up when you opened it.

Speaking of mesh the little flap that protects the screen has a little zip pouch on it too, it’s not really big enough for cables but the Joy-Con Straps fit in their fine. More games or perhaps a cleaning cloth could be kept in there too.

Overall both of these cases are high quality and more importantly will help protect your Switch from any drops. Plus they both look great! The blue Zelda one is very bright and if you don’t like attention, it might be safer to go for the black one.

These two cases will set you back around $30AU.

Game Traveller Deluxe Travel Case

Everything about this case is big. Big on size, big on price and big on included accessories. If you’re looking for something to protect or travel with every part of your Switch then this is the case for you.

This case holds the Switch, the dock, a Joy-Con grip or Pro Controller as well as a spot for your AC adapter and a bag to hold all the cables in. There’s even two Switch game cases included and the little microSD card holders as well.

The case is really high quality much like its smaller brother, it has a strong zip and grippy handle. You won’t be dropping this.

Everything fits so neat as well, it’s very snug for all parts. Even if you put the case upside it should hold it all in place. The little mesh bag that comes with it is also great. We managed to fit in an HDMI cable and a USB-C cable in it, as well the game card holders.

This case isn’t one you’d use every day but if you’re a frequent traveller or a competitive player it could be the one for you.

The retail on this case is $69.95, but it’s huge and strong.

Everywhere Messenger Bag

Aside from the giant Switch logo on the side of this one, you could be forgiven for thinking that this is just a regular old laptop bag. However, open it up and you’ll soon see it’s not. There’s room in this one for everything you need. It just takes a lot less space than the Travel Case.

There’s room for a dock, an AC adapter, Pro Controller and other cables. The real bonus with this one is that the spot for the Switch itself? It’s another case! This case is a lot thinner and less protective than the other cases we’ve reviewed here but it still of high quality. It’s a great one to buy to carry everything around, but then you’ve got also a little case just for the Switch when you don’t need everything else.

This bag will set you back around $60. If you factor in the smaller case it’s actually quite a good bargain if you need all the space.

I just bought the deluxe travel case. Really great build quality! You could drop a brick on top and not damage anything inside.

As pictured above, there is space for the console with joycons attached, grip, dock, pro controller, and cables. There isn’t a slot for the playstand, but it can sit on top of the dock without moving around as it is a snug fit.

I got the Mario accessory starter kit for $29.95 from EB games, the case itself is very well made, fits the Switch with joy cons attached with a Velcro strap to keep it secure, has slots to accommodate 12 cartridges, a mesh “net” like compartment that easily fits the included Mario headphones, joy con “armour” (effectively hard wiimote type covers) and also has room for your joy con straps.

The kit also comes with these little red Mario “armour” (hard condoms) for your analog sticks…
They’re pretty craptastic! Much like the “armour” for the joy cons themselves, which need to be removed when you want to use your comfort grip because they are too chunky to fit. They also protrude a mm or so more than the L and R buttons, making said buttons hard to use.

The kit also includes a microfibre screen cloth, a screen protector installing tool (an over glorified bit of black plastic with Super Mario printed on it) and a poor quality screen protector that peels off from the heat produced by the console after a few hours of gaming in docked mode.

If your going to buy this kit, do so only for the cool looking (the zip is a coin! Lol) & tough case…. The rest is average at best
