Nintendo selling physical Splatoon 2 version with no game card in Japan
Splatoon is so crazy popular in Japan that Nintendo is doing a couple of weird things for the release of Splatoon 2 coming up.
Through the Japanese My Nintendo store (geo-blocked), the company will be selling a physical copy of Splatoon 2 – but without any game card. It’ll come with the same plastic case you’d expect to buy in stores but instead, contain a download code. Clearly for people who want the digital version but, still want something to put on their shelves.
The other crazy idea, Nintendo is selling the box that Splatoon 2 Bundle comes in. Just the box, no Switch, not controllers or game. Clearly, this one is for the completionists, the box will set you back around $5 if you’re really keen.
It’s unlikely Nintendo will do anything like this here, but would you buy a ‘physical’ copy of the game with a download code instead of a card? Let us know in the comments.

Strangely enough, I think this is a great idea! Digital is convenient, but I miss the physical box that comes with the retail version. This way, you get the best of both worlds! Very niche market, but works for some I guess.
Hmmm… I’ll say no to the case with download code as I’d rather completely physical. But, I also said I wouldn’t get all the Smash Bros amiibo too…yet here I am with very little shelf space left in the house ?
I’d consider it. I’d prefer a cart though.
Where I can see this being terrific is that retailers are likely to discount the product where Nintendo has traditionally been pretty poor in terms of doing online sales. If this was at Target or Big W I can’t imagine there’s be any reason why the game wouldn’t be offered at a lower than RRP price like those games with carts are.
This is getting closer to what I’d like, of course. The main thing preventing me from going digital is space and not having boxes. However, I still wish there were a way that you could buy a physical game and then, if you decided you wanted a digital version of it too, you could get a massive discount on a digital code for it.
Like, Pokemon, for example. Love the boxes. I’ve still got the original Red/Blue/Yellow boxes. But at this point in time I’d love to have the games digitally on my 3DS to let me easily swap between games for the Bank and for “daily” stuff to do.
