Today during a press conference to announce a partnership with mobile game developer DeNA, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata dropped also announced that Nintendo is working on its next dedicated console codename NX. This console will have a ‘brand new concept’.

The announcement of the codename was an aside to the bigger news from today but Satoru Iwata said more would be revealed about the NX in 2016. They did not say whether this would be a home console or another portable console.

As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename “NX.” It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year. – Satoru Iwata

    NINTENDO HQ – OSAKA, JAPAN

“As requested, Mr Iwata. The date of release for that new EA game.”

“Excellent. We will announce it on that day.”

Is there a group in videogame-dom other than women that are more scrutinised?

This happens as USA is asleep.

That is because of the markets, not because of your oversized egos, Americans.

Look at the colouring in the infographic. Wii U is a similar colour to the tablet, 3DS is a darker blue, and NX is a shade of blue in between the two. Surely this can’t be unintentional, when the other platforms are clearly different colours. I think this basically confirms NX as a hybrid handheld/console platform (it may even be N for Nintendo and X for ‘cross’ as in cross platform, rather than ‘ex’). It could be they won’t completely abandon 3DS and Wii U until they are confident NX will gain a foothold (like the third pillar DS approach).

It sounds like from this new discussion that they now see a dedicated gaming platform as one pillar they can support, and they want to use the other pervasive devices to capture gamers and lead them there. Removing the handheld/home console distinction/decision in the next generation makes this argument much clearer to the average consumer (and obviously has huge development benefits). Fascinating move by Nintendo… can’t wait to explore more and analyse it further.

Or they did that color on purpose as to not reveal which platform it is. Using both colors could be saying “Maybe it’s this…or maybe it’s this. In other words, it tells us nothing and you’re overthinking it. How would a hybrid even work? Aside from remote play on PS4/Vita. An entirely portable console would have to have tiny parts, which would either be weak or super expensive. That’s just how hardware works. It needs to focus on one or the other. A remote play situation would be fine but nothing new

You just have a scalable development system, as is the case with Unity. So you drop textures and resolution when it’s portable, and bump this back up when it’s on a HDTV. Processing could be shared between devices or streamed. The difference from now is that it would be one SDK for the system, rather than two, and this consolidates Nintendo’s whole development system. Alternatively, the portable device could access the smartphone/tablet versions of games, and then act as a controller/second screen for the HD games at home. There’s many ways this can work… just because it isn’t currently done doesn’t mean it’s not possible… especially for Nintendo. Look at all the hardware they pioneer every single generation!

And the colour thing was coy and playful but could hint at something, Nintendo does not take its communication lightly. What I’m interested in is the shift in strategy and how this can be supported and successful in a changing market.

I’m hoping it’s a VR headset. All the motion controls they’ve made, the 3D worlds they’ve created, the live streaming of video to controller. It’s all come down to this…

They tried and failed with the Virtual Boy, and since then they have been creating elaborate tests using different control methods, training gamers to handle a unique experience that was meant to be unlike anything else, Oculus Rift beat them to the punch however. Nintendo will just ignore that it ever existed though, just like every other competing company.

And now… Our bodies are ready! The NX. Nintendo Xrossing you into the next dimension. Come join our world. BAM!
