Nintendo is considering more Wii U games for Switch
The Switch line-up has been, and will the rest of the year be bolstered by Wii U games. However Nintendo could be up for doing more Wii U games on the Switch, but they’re never going to be ‘straight ports’ says Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils-Aime.
Speaking to IGN in a new interview, Reggie says that the reason they’re considering more ports is to get more eyes on Wii U games.
The internal conversations we have is that on one hand, the development teams would love to showcase their content to a wider base, and certainly in short order the install base on Nintendo Switch will be larger than the install base we ended with Wii U.
However, if you think Nintendo are just going to dump games on the Switch without touching them, that’s not their style.
So there is that opportunity. What also drives the discussion, though is ‘what more will there be?’ Meaning, let’s take Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as an example. It needed to be the definitive version of that software for the consumer to be as excited as they are. Pokken Tournament DX with the additional fighters, the additional Pokemon, that was important for it to be an element of the game. What we are internally resisting is just a pure port, versus thinking about how not only do we showcase a game to a wider audience, but how do we make sure that there’s something more? So it’s an active discussion.
Reggie used Metroid: Samus Returns as an example of Nintendo’s philosophy on this, even if it’s not a Switch game.
“I thought I was going to make it a day at E3 without being asked about Mother 3. …Look, in the end, fill in your favorite franchise here. It comes down to how do we do something more? How do we do something unique? How do we take a franchise and make it vibrant with more and [reach] more people? That’s the focus.

A lot of the games I’d expect to see ports of I already own, so I wouldn’t personally buy them, but I know I’d definitely want to see them for other people’s sake. Bayonetta 2 is a big one in particular.
I agree, plus once Bayonetta 1,2 remasters are released for Switch for that larger audience, we would pretty quickly see a Bayonetta 3!! (Hopes…)
I rather have new games thanks Nintendo no ports !
That’s fine but for people who didn’t own a Wii U (majority of video game consumers) the ports offer a chance for playing great Nintendo titles. Second benefit is that these are inherently portable editions and will get bonus content

I love the idea of being able to try out more Wii u games as I never had a Wii u console
As long as it doesn’t take away too much from the development of other games, I’d be for this. I’d particularly like an updated (and better supported) Super Mario Maker, Super Mario 3D World and (possibly) Yoshi’s Woolly World – though the first and third one were released on 3DS so they’re (unfortunately) unlikely. I previously owned all the games I was interested in playing on Wii U (except Splatoon), but it would be nice to own and replay some of them nevertheless (Mario Maker most of all).
Star Fox would be a good carry over – released near the end of the Wii U I feel it was under appreciated.
