Japan to use Pokémon Go to get tourists back in quake affected regions

Four neighbouring prefectures in Japan are teaming up to use Pokémon Go to get tourists back after the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

The regions of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima, and Kumamoto have teamed up with Niantic to place more PokeStops, more Pokemon gyms and even to place more rare Pokemon in the region.

They’re hoping that the increased foot traffic with help everyone in those regions reconstruct and get younger people to “to understand the reality facing the disaster-hit prefectures” says Miyagi Governor Yoshihiro Murai.

While the prefectures want people back, there are still some areas off limits including the Fukushima nuclear plant. They’re also working with Niantic to remove Pokemon from that area so no one strays and get into trouble.
