Iwata Asks: Miyamoto on Wii Fit and more

Nintendo’s Ask Iwata series is still continuing on. This time, the Nintendo president sits down with Sigeru Miyamoto to talk about the concept behind Wii Fit and more. Wii Fit stems back to when Miyomoto joined Nintendo. When he turned 40, he realised that he needed to start getting fit again and that he could be fit. Miyomoto began researching weight monitoring diets and used graphs to record his weight. The idea for a “”Health Pack”” game ended up being Wii Fit. More inside The development research for the game was simple, he told his team of three to start measuring their body weight and what they ate. However, obviously telling his team about the project was still a very generlised idea one that came to a standstill, until a member of the team tried to stand on two scales and found that it was hard to keep his balance. Miyomoto came up with the idea of the connection of two scales together and create a program to see how well they were keeping their balance. This balancng fluke became the basis of Wii Fit as we know it today. Many scale manufacturs were approached to make these new scales but after a while Nintendo decided to do it themselves after a lack of interest.

As strange as this may seem, Miyomoto has always been about making new things. “”I enjoy making things that are unlike anything anyone has ever made before,”” Miyamoto said. “”Everything you think of becomes a new idea, and even if it’s nothing big, it’s still a new idea. That’s why I always thought of this as an issue worth challenging. I was also convinced that you can have fun just by measuring your weight.””
