78-year-old man '70km/h over speed limit'

  • Police impound 78 year old's car
  • Say he was doing 170km/h in 100km/h zone
  • Oldest person to have car taken under hoon laws

A 78-year-old Melbourne man allegedly speeding at 170km/h on a winding road has become the oldest person to have his car impounded under Victoria's hoon laws.

Police say the man was caught driving a Nissan Pulsar at 170km/h in a 100km/h zone in Brandy Creek Road, Warragul, east of Melbourne on January 1.

He was following a Nissan Skyline driven by a 36-year-old man.

Acting Sergeant Carlo Visser said the road was six metres wide and winding.

"It is disappointing to see a senior member of our community being so irresponsible - what example does this set for younger drivers?" he said.

"The man expressed to us that he believed he was a skilled driver, and that he races cars.

"But we fail to see how a driver can be competent when they are tearing around roads at 170km/h knowing that other drivers will not be expecting you.

"To put those people's safety - and your own - at such risk is really just toying with death," Act Sgt Visser said.

Both men had their cars impounded and paid $600 to retrieve their vehicles from the Warragul impoundment yesterday.

The 78-year-old from Narre Warren North and the 36-year-old Canterbury man will both appear before court where they face fines and licence suspensions.

Previously, the oldest driver to have their car impounded for speeding was a 64-year-old Melbourne man who drove a Porsche at 110km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Police have already impounded 42 vehicles in just six days from Victorian drivers.

The worst hoons are in their 40s and 50s in BMW, Audi and Lexii. Strangely, they're the ones that never get impounded.

When you're over... 80 I think it is in NSW, you have to pass a test each year. I think that's the case anyway, never having been over 80 I can't talk from personal experience :P

I agree- the worst are those in their 40's/50's hooning around in their luxury sedans. These people also seem to be the ones who call up talk back radio saying "OHNOES ALL P-PLATE DRIVERS CAN'T DRIVE PROPERLY WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE" etc. Speaking of which, here's a bit of a vent. Having P-Plates automatically makes others assume you're a prick. Now, everyone will respond to P-Plate drivers in a different way. If they see one ahead, they may either keep a distance, just drive normally, or the real bastards who speed up and overtake you while yelling obscenities as they pass. Well that last bit has never happened to me, but I've seen it. Now I'm not defending all P-Plate drivers, there are many who are complete dickheads. What I'm saying is that I'm sick of being lopped into the same basket as them simply because of the plates. S Plates would so the same for senior citizens. Not every singly P-Plater is an incompetent git who can't drive or loves to speed, there are idiot drivers in all age demographics, as is evident here. It's just the rest of society don't have plates to pigeon hole them on the road.

Hopefully my ramblings made some sort of sense :P

The worst are oldies who just don't know what the hell they're doing. I almost slammed into one the other day. I was on the roundabout coming around and she was approaching and she didn't even look. She just went straight ahead. Lucky we both braked at the correct time. At least it's easy to identify an old driver from afar--if they're driving too far to the left, they're old :P

Plates are so people are noticable of those people and drive more carefuly around them. Thats why we need S plates- so people are more aware of them- so less acidents.

Wow, a well though out argument from trin :P

While this is true, to recap Zod's point it encourages stereotyping and 'oh all S-platers are bad drivers'. A better idea would only be L plates, as the learners you need to take into consideration. P is really only to help the police. Really, you should be able to tell when you're driving near them whether they're a crap driver or not, and if they are, stay away from them.

This comes from absolutely no knowledge of driving or advanced road rules, so I probably sound like an idiot >.<

Well P plates are also there to alert drivers that its a new/unexperienced driver. But thinking about it, all these laws put on P platers should really be put onto seniors too.

Yeah for people who are driving that just makes no sence.
Some times you don't know until its to late- it either happens to fast- or while you avoid it you could see that if you hadn't have been lucky- their antics could be worse then P platers some time- while they don't go fast most of the time. Their problem is they are either to slow- or they forget rules.

L plates wouldn't be better. They are by far the most disrespected people on the road not including cyclists. I encountered so many idiots on my Ls.

To be perfectly honest, I would lump older drivers in the same category as learners in terms of skills and awareness of their surroundings, but putting L plates on your car does not garner you any respect or 'consideration'.

L platers are annoying cos they go to slow. They're learning so they go slow. Its just life lol.

You dont need s plates on cars, you can tell when an old person is driving because its a crappy old small car and they go about 30 ks under the speedlimit.

Heres another one from news.com.au

Quote

TRAFFIC police have apprehended the state's oldest alleged hoon, after a 70-year-old Lake Clifton man had his car impounded yesterday.
The man was stopped by traffic enforcement group officers on the notorious Old Coast Road at Lake Clifton at 1.15pm.

Police will allege that he was driving his Holden Rodeo at 98km/h - 58km/h above the designated 40km/h speed zone near Coronation Rd.

The man's vehicle was seized by police and will be impounded for seven days.

He will be charged with reckless driving and will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.
