Alright ever since I've started driving a car I've found out things that I've needed but only AFTER I needed them... So I'm asking people and I'm giving my own suggestions to what you should have in your car with you while you drive.

- Jumper Cables (Self jumper cables if you have the money! I don't know what their real name is but you can buy them in Super Cheap Auto, they make it so you can jump start your car without needing another car.)
- Oil, radiator fluid.
- Jack.
- Spare tyre.
- Jerry Can of petrol.
- Towing rope.

And its good to know you have great friends that will come and get you even if its in the middle of the night if your bogged. Oh and its best if that friend has a FWD. =P

So, what else do you need to bring with you?

When I had my first car I had all that rattling around in the boot, now I've swapped it out for a RAC Membership. With my "modern" car with all it's fancy electronics instead of my ye olde car that needed all that I just call them - I used to be into the whole self maintenance thing but that was when I had time TTB you should seriously think about it.

Although you should have a Spare and Jack simply because they come with the car :/

And before you all go "haha Vooks a idiot and get the RAC to do it all" it's not that I can't look after my car, I can change the oil, jump start, change a tyre all of that but the last time I had to do it was a 42c degree day and I had to change a tyre on a hill in the middle of no where. I aint doing that again.

That sucks, how much did the RAC membership cost you? And I dont know if we have RAC in SA, I've never heard of it lol.

Ours is the RAC, Victoria is the RACV, Maybe you got the NRMA? I don't know :/

I'd say first aid kit it up.

I agree with Vook. What you need is RAC Roadside Assistance, a safe car to begin with and some basic skills with first aid and common sense. The rest helps though, if you know what to do with it.

An empty one wouldn't, you don't want one full unless its on the back of like 4WD.

They may not be as easy to use on-the-go, but it's always been a part of driving and stuff. I don't care how crap I was at navigating (and how crap Ninja was at taking the directions) it had a simple kind of charm compared to the GPS he uses now. I mean, using a map you get to see the surrounding area and shiz instead of blindly following the lefts and rights you actually get to learn the area better looking at the map yourself.

What kind of GPS is that Plasma? My GPS is basically an electronic map...

They're maps, but is it the same as having a map in front of you and being able to clearly look at the whole thing at once with the same ease? Yes it makes it easier but it takes out the brainwork and means you're spoon fed "take the next left" and if it broke no doubt you'd have no idea where you were/ Useful yes, but just not as practical or.. the same *shrug*

Heh if my GPS did break I would use a map, if I needed it. I learnt how to read maps in primary school so I'm all good. not sure if they still will teach that in the future though.

That's something I'm doing next week out in the country side, getting some hands on map-reading lessons >_> But yeah I guess it's just preference, the ease and perhaps less-brains of GPS vs time consuming, more work but awesome retro DIY maps.

Ur saying its a bad thing not to let RAC<insert letter here> do it all? I dont know how to any of the above. That's what RACQ is for.

Queensland is RACQ but we have NRMA available too.

The point of a GPS is that I can find out where to go in places I dont know. It cuts so much time out of my day not having to stop after every call at work and figure out how to get to my next destination. Plus, its not as dangerous as me having to quickly glance at my refedex on the expressway because Im positive I missed my turnoff. >_> Im not saying not to have a refedex in the car, my GPS died last summer one afternoon when I accidentally left it on in the hot sun. The refedex was the only other choice. Im just saying it is MORE practical then a roadmap. Plus, I have Samantha from Sex & The City telling me how to get there. Tell me that's not awesome?! :-P

i still say that changing a tyre should be part of the drivers license test.... if you cant change a tyre then you shouldnt b e driving

I think driving on the highway should be on the driving test. So many ppl get their license and get on the highway and panic and drive like an idiot >_>

I wonder if you logged races from Gran Turismo in the logbook would they even check and care?

I did 3 hours around Laguna Seca, 2 hours round High Speed ring and 6 hours around Apricot Hill.
