So what cars do people have here?

I currently have a Nissan Pintara Executive '92, but I'm thinking of buying a ED Falcon XR6 '93.

awesome. I believe these two cars are the best on the market for the small-medium car. My first research into buying a car started off with the toyota yaris....thank god I didn't end up with one. they're so plastic. and the speedometer is placed in the middle of the dashboard..wtf? lame.well no offense to yaris drivers :P

I've been looking for cars for a few years now seeing as I've been driving since '05 and still am yet to purchase one, due to not have any cash flow. After I get a job which should hopefully be in the next week or so, after I save for Uni I'll finally be able to out and get myself a vehicle. I've been thinking as of late... should I go for something old and cheap or wait a bit longer and get a new small car? Prices seem to be continuing to go down... The thinking here is the old one of course is more likely to die on me but with the new car, I'd be paying a fair bit in insurance (to all the d*ckheads in the past who have f*cked around on the roads, a big thank you). Thoughts?

Oh and my current vehicle:

Yep, there it is. It's pretty cool, I get all the ladies. ;D

I cant see the pic? anyways I say buy new. because a decent S/H will cost just a bit under a new one.

That's the joke... :P Anyway, thanks for your thoughts- yeah, I'm pretty much looking for something that is ridiculously cheap to run.

Something newer will be cheaper in the long run, a newer car should be more fuel effiecent and depending on the car it would most likley be more reliable. saying that it really depends what you mean by an 'old' car. My car above is a 97 model ive had it for about 2 years, has just had its 200,000km service and since ive had it has not let me down once, and is showing no signs that its going to 'die' on me. ive only ever had to have new tyres put on and the scheduled services. But like ive said it really depends on the car.

ummm i dont know why you think that? if you buy a new car you loose about $5,000 - $7,000 as soon as you pay for it cause of taxes. And its always better to buy the last of the previous model than the 1st of the new model as the last of the previous model will have alot of extras and any known 'bugs' are generally fixed.

True but I guess it all depends on the car your trying to buy. I only said buy new if its a small-medium car. they generally don't lose that much value. and in that range cars are very cheap.

oh yeah thats true, you can buy a 2 year old commodore these days for real. its funny though on car that really holds value is the Hilux, i remember a few years back my dad got one, we 1st looked around at 2nd hand ones, and ones upto 5 years old where only like 5-6k cheaper than a new one, so he decided to get a new one.

Well, if I was to buy new I'd be looking at a small hatchback, if it was s/h, nothing bigger than say a Camry. In terms of age, anything within the last 10 years is what I'd be looking at. I believe Japanese cars are usually a good option if you're looking for something like that, a Toyota etc. I wouldn't mind a Commodore, but they use quite a bit of juice... don't they?

yeah, my camry is a 3.0 V6 has plenty of power (beats VT/VX commodores, and even BA falcon once!) and it uses about 10 litres per 100k's so that isnt too bad considering its age etc. its roomy inside and has a huge boot, much larger than a commodore or falcon boot due to it being front wheel drive.

But if your going to look at a hatch back i wouldn't look at anything else then a corolla (yes im a toyota fan boy) but the corolla have always been one of the best cars on the road, and has high resale value too

but yeah Jap cars all the way
