Chiptunes are great, we get it but what about something new created within the last 10 years.

What songs will be 'omg nostalgia' about in 10 years more. (That's 2002, Gamecube ownwards etc)

The great Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Megaman themes will be there for forever. What's new to add to the pile?

I have a few to get us started.

Twilight Princess Hyrule Field

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRHoPxAfy_Q

Skyward Sword might be a better game but damned if I can remember any music from it. Apart from this;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fN1vFESbfZk

This is also amazing... but not within the last 10 years.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Rvn47nteL8

Super Mario Galaxy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjGJgtNRjzc

That above is good... but then there is this....

Wii Sports

Could possibly be the Super Mario Bros. theme for a new generation.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5c4KOopwLs

There's many more Nintendo ones I'd like to cover maybe I will later but here's some other ones.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Gb1_qaBVrg

Drake's Theme from Uncharted. It just rocks.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CHyFqB3eqg

I like this more than the main theme. No spoilers... well the track is but when this happens it's going down.

Lastly.....

MGS4 Main Theme, I got a music boner for Harry Gregson-Williams I'm sorry. Then again it's not really that original....

As soon as I saw this, I instantly thought Gusty Garden Galaxy.

I'd throw in Phendrana Drifts from Metroid Prime.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbbUv1hz6mE

Though I tend to not like music from "blockbuster" titles in that it sounds too much like Hollywood stuff as opposed to memorable video game tunes, I did like the credits music from Mass Effect 1. Whether it'll be remembered a long time from now is a different matter.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo6G7du5Ng4

How about the Smash Bros. Brawl main theme? It's probably just as memorable as Melee before it. I'll use Menu 1 as it's the tune that will be remembered.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nur18hoGH3E

Also responding to Pokemon in your bonus round:

Pokemon are generally very good at gym battle music, but this one is up there with Gen 1.

I wonder, great/epic/well done background music is all well and good. But what about music as a gameplay device instead of just background music? I guess it's quite hard to do, given that players very rarely will stick to a set time when it comes to performing actions. I'm sure we've all had our fair share of "scary musical fanfare and monster noise, but if there was a scare-the-player-moment just now I missed it because I was trying to see if I could backtrack, or was investigating the corners of this room for items"

Gotta mention the Halo series, because as much as it has been a "mainstream, blockbuster" series, it has truly had some fantastic music. Whilst a lot of Halo is about epic, sweeping heroic movements, there's a particular part in Halo 2 where you're desperately trying to get somewhere, and are travelling through the midst of the Flood overunning the Covenant forces without any hope for abatement, the whole atmosphere of deseration and despair is pretty chilling.

Overall, I guess it's hard to really define "great game music" because there's plenty of great-sounding-to-laymen music out there, which isn't the same as great-moment or really-well-used in games, which again isn't the same as really-musically-good

Absolutely agree regarding Twilight Princess' Hyrule Field theme. That tune is just so great, big and powerful! And the Halo suite you posted Plasma is amazing. As much as Halo has it's image of only appealing to frat boys and 12 year olds on Xbox Live, the campaigns and music especially are very strong.

I found this menu theme in Metroid Prime set the mood for the game absolutely perfectly.

I get what you mean Plasma, some game music is not especially fantastic by itself, but combined with the situation it's presented in, can often transcend the quality of the music to another plane entirely.

Also, I get legitimate chills almost every time I listen to this piece.

Kirby's Epic Yarn is absolutely loaded with instrumental (largely piano) goodness. The version of the Kirby theme is great too, but 'Lava Landing' is my favourite.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aV8o3xEiofY&feature=related

The moody old typewriter music from Resident Evil 4. Somehow comforting (a save point! Respite from Las Plagas, yay!), but also foreboding (they're waiting outside)...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k775eX-Du68

The from World of Goo just scream ADVENTUUUURE. This one is called 'Tumbler.'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oteaJAocSsE

Another that PG mentioned already is the Brawl Theme, though I prefer the self-indulgent-epicness of the operatic vocal version that plays in the title video.

I'm still far from finished with Twilight Princess and the Metroid Prime saga, (hello, backloggery challenge), so I expect I'll appreciate those more in the future. Halo's score(s) are also very impressive. They really build the mood. Though the chanting was a little overdone in Halo 3; loading screens for example. Totally agree with all SMG/SMG2 tracks, as those are all wondrous.

Having not played Xenoblade yet, I don't feel justified putting anything in from it, but what I've heard is awesome.

A jazzed up version of one of my favourite themes in Ace Attorney. Man, gonna love that sax.

Okami is a treasure trove of great music! Here's an example.

One of the highlights of TWEWY. Was my ringtone for some time as well.

Days is such an underrated game imo. I loved how the music perfectly conveys the mood.

Okay, so maybe this single world theme (and the level Banjoland) is a tenth of the greatness of BK N&B. Damn there needs to be a new Banjo Kazooie game made (that doesn't rely so much on HEY-NOSTALGIA-AND-OLD-MATERIAL!)

GIF or not, doesn't change the fact that you're WRONG.

My entries are probably not going to be remembered ten or so years down the track but anyone who has played said games can attest to the power that these tunes hold when you hear them in-game.

I also can't get them to embed so I will just have to link them ;_;

Resident Evil Zero - Save Room Theme
Resident Evil - Peace of Mind
Resient Evil 2 - Secure Place
Resident Evil 3 - Free From Fear
Resident Evil CODE: Veronica - A Moment of Relief
Resident Evil 4 - Serenity
Dino Crisis - A Safe Place

I think it speaks volumes about the design of these games that said music can make you feel so relieved the moment you hear it
.
That's all I have......for now.

You can just post the "share" link and it embeds automagically.

I tried to, but it still didn't work for some reason. The forum has been behaving weirdly for me lately.

But I'll try again......

Here's some of my favourite tracks from Mass Effect, which has been mentioned here before. The Faunts song that features on the credits is definitely great, so much so that they returned to score the Mass Effect 3 credits track too, but I think some of the ambient / environmental tracks that play in the game are just AMAZING. They really take you somewhere and it was the first soundtrack for a video game that I actually PURCHASED. Deus Ex came a close second =3

http://youtu.be/XAIt6KDOcHY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWW-hJbzhSU

Some are working but some are refusing to embed :(

Mass Effect - Vigil
Mass Effect - Feros

Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 both fall quite short in this department, to be perfectly honest and I always felt it hurt the games atmosphere significantly. Mass Effect 2 more so than Mass Effect 3

Don't know how I forgot. Bayonetta ost is not only the best video game soundtrack, but the greatest musical achievement mankind has ever made.
