So checking on GAF the past few weeks, just looking at the Media Create figures for sales in Japan, and a trend I've noticed with the 3DS is the it is dominating everything depsite the fact that software-wise, it has next to nothing at the moment.

Just look as this weeks figures:

PS3 23,897
PSP 22,095
Wii 11,235
DSi LL 2,005

Add up every other console on that list and their combined sales still don't get near the 3DS's for the week. Is it a pre-emptive mass buy to do with Mario/Mario Kart and Monster Hunter? It's been doing it ever since the price drop. Does anyone know anything I don't?

I saw that too. You're right - it surely is a pre-emptive thing and people are content with playing their ds games on their pink 3ds's until the bombs begin to drop.

The 3DS is at ridiculous prices now, $199 at K-mart at the moment. 2 years ago that was the price of a Lite. I honestly think that there's been a lot over overreaction these past 6 months to how 'poorly' the 3DS has been selling, and for a system with 'no games' I sure have built a decent collection of games for it already.

Really? Because what I'm seeing on the shelves now doesn't look very different to what I saw six months ago... what games do you have?

I could have bought Resident Evil for $30 at Kmart yesterday too, I passed on it because I know I'd never get around to it. The only real ghastly title in this stack is Sims 3.

I have Rabbids, Street Fighter, Zelda and Steel Diver. And I regret getting Street Fighter (and maybe Steel Diver mainly because it was pretty sh!t control wise- almost unplayable because of the controls).

There really are no games out right now which I'm excited for and coming out in the future I'm only getting Mario Kart because it will be good for multiplayer. James Noir as well if that comes out (It's been pushed back again to late November :/)

I bought Zelda and mercenaries, I think I played mercs 4 times total, it's too fast paced for me.. the only other game I came close to buying is Skylanders, although those new RSPCA Nintendogs ads on the tv made me briefly want the game. And I dont know why in haven't got Streetfighter yet, I'm a huge SF mark, strange.

It does take adjusting to get used to Re Mercs but once I did I found myself hooked on nailing those zombies. Models in the distance aside, a very solid game.

Wait, RE for $30? I'd jump right on that myself!

Aren't there a lot of services in Japan using the 3DS that aren't utilised here? I could be wrong. >_>

Chipping into this thread for renewed discussion, the latest figures from Media Create include the debut performance of Super Mario 3D Land, along with a fairly modest boost to the 3DS's hardware sales.

01./00. [3DS] Super Mario 3D Land <ACT> (Nintendo) {2011.11.03} (¥4.800) - 343.492 / NEW
3DS Hardware This Week: 145.271 Last Week: 65.041
Source: MediaCreate via NeoGAF

I've got to admit, these numbers aren't that bad at all; the hardware bump is encouraging. The real test for 3D Land is whether it can sustain its sales momentum over the coming months; Galaxy 2 had a similar stellar initial outing, but has yet to break the million barrier, and did very little for hardware in the longer term.

With Mario Kart 7 around the corner, things are going to get very interesting!

I think Mario Kart will have the legs while i'm not so sure about 3D Land. Unless the game truly does manage to capture people and spread good word of mouth (remember, the game has twice as much as it appears).

I like this graph for comparison too.

Posted Image

I think it's the first holiday season of the DS compared with the 3DS. Not sure what the DS had out in it's first holiday season. Was Nintendogs out by that point?

I also think it's worthwhile to note that it managed to 2.5x the sales of all the other consoles that week despite MW3 and Uncharted getting a fairly good deal of sales as well (I imagine mostly on the PS3). Though that probably doesn't matter since these games aren't really there to sell hardware.

Bumping this thread with the latest figures, if only because the latest news is entirely appropriate for the thread.

3DS Japanese Hardware Sales | This week: 120.920 | Last Week: 96.219
04./04. [3DS] Super Mario 3D Land <ACT> (Nintendo) {2011.11.03} (¥4.800) - 61.710 / 560.960 (-1%)

Hardware seems to be doing very well; I have to seriously concede that such a turnaround is nothing short of impressive. However, software sales still seem to be struggling compare to hardware sales, although 3D Land is performing OK for the time being. With Nintendo taking a loss on hardware sold, this certainly can't be good news for them to hear. Mario Kart 7 sales will be included in next week's stats; lets see how much of a game changer it will be.

From GAF, Japan Mario Kart first week sales

Mario Kart SC - 261,797 (GBA Hardware: 95,618)
Mario Kart DD - 179,230 (GCN Hardware: 20,587)
Mario Kart DS - 224,411 (DS Hardware: 295,701)
Mario Kart Wii - 608,147 (Wii Hardware: 50,155)

Mario Kart 7 - 451,932 (3DS Hardware: 216,350)

Amazing. Mario Kart Wii was a lot bigger, but I imagone the install base was also a lot bigger. I expect it to sell consistantly for the rest of the year too. Monster Hunter next week as well. :o

Well gentlemen, I admit defeat with regards to Super Mario 3D Land. Sales in Japan for the game keep seeing buffs from the holiday sales, and Mario Kart appears to be doing reasonably well too; the true test for its legs will be after the holiday season, but it's still solid. Monster Hunter took a massive dive from release week, though, but it seems that the software library has finally come to.

02./01. [3DS] Monster Hunter 3G # <ACT> (Capcom) {2011.12.10} (¥5.800) - 208.427 / 730.386 (-60%)
03./02. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 <RCE> (Nintendo) {2011.12.01} (¥4.800) - 182.418 / 789.871 (-1%)
05./03. [3DS] Super Mario 3D Land <ACT> (Nintendo) {2011.11.03} (¥4.800) - 112.533 / 837.143 (+25%)

3DS Hardware: This Week: 367.691 Last Week: 350.321

Now lets play the "How high can the hardware numbers go?" game. :P

Oh man, when Monster Hunter 4 comes out......

Then there's Pokemon.

I've got to admit though, it looks like I've had it the wrong way around. I thought 3D Land would flop more than Skyward Sword. Then again, I didn't pay quite so much attention to 3D Land before it was released.

How are those figures stacking up against Coffee's predictions?

Well, going by the benchmarks set in his Forum Bets thread: "I was actually thinking of going by feel, but I guess better definitions are in order. You okay with Twilight Princess-ish sales as a target for success? (6-ish million on Wii. The bar is high for Zelda, admittedly) Or will we go with a lower bar of, say, 5-ish million? This still assumes that the game is supposed to be a rather big success.

3D Land is easier Posted Image NSMB's are both over 20 million. Galaxy 1 did 10 or so, Galaxy 2 failed at 6-7. Given that 3D Land is supposed to bring the 2d Mario crowd to 3d and that 2d Mario is the ultimate killer application, I feel it is fair to demand it to drive 3DS sales and exceed Galaxy.

So far, I think he's doing pretty well, even if we will all be waiting quite some time yet before a reasonable amount of time has passed. From what I've read, Skyward Sword has been doing quite well in the USA, but has performed poorly in both Europe and Japan. Even when other Wii titles are seeing a massive boost at this point in time, Zelda continues to plummet on both the UK and Japanese charts.

3D Land seems to be seeing a fairly modest boost in sales thanks to the selling power of a holiday season and high demand software (Mario Kart 7 everywhere and arguably Monster Hunter in Japan). It's almost on its way to outselling both Galaxy games in Japan, but continues to trail in Europe. Again, I believe the game is performing well in the Americas, so who knows what it will manage to pull off.

I think that 3D land would have a much longer sales burn time since it's one of those games that if someone showed me out and about, I'd consider buying it. It has so much more than just a straight forward game and with plenty of replay value.

Plus, Nintendo usually re-do their TV ads fairly late; well after a game has been released. That may be a booster later in the holiday months.

3DS sells over 500,000 untis in Japan this week.

Super Mario 3D Land surpasses the LTD's of either of the Galaxy games.

Mario Kart 7 moves passed the LTD of Super Mario 3D Land.

This is nuts.

Mario Kart 7 surpassing the 1 million barrier does not come as any surprise. Once I realised it retained the core gameplay of its predecessors, I have had every confidence it would smash that milestone with ease. Not even a lack of content is enough to deter the sheer scale of enjoyment people get from Mario Kart games; even Double Dash, arguably the worst entry in the series, performed reasonably well.

However, I am continuously impressed with the sales of Super Mario 3D Land. I seriously didn't think it would ever reach the sorts of numbers not only so quickly, but with the sort of momentum that it has right now in Japan. 3D Mario has never performed well historically, but it is seeing massive buffs in sales alongside Mario Kart and the holiday rush. I am at a loss to explain it… perhaps I was wrong about the game after all.

And half a million units in a week? Crazy, crazy stuff! Lets see how well the platform performs going into the New year and beyond. :)

Any figures for Monster Hunter? :P

Nah, this is what GAF got out of Famitsu. I imagine that's closing in on the milliom mark as well.
